Yeowomen Offense Can’t Find Traction, Fall to W&J

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College field hockey couldn't find the magic offensviely as the visiting Washington and Jefferson Presidents used three second-half goals to defeat the Yeowomen, 3-0.

The Yeowomen maintained possession well in the opening minutes, but they just couldn't find the target - finishing the half with three shots - none on frame.

The Presidents had a solid offensive effort through the opening 35 minutes, posting eight shots with half troubling Oberlin goalie Maggie Gossiaux. The Metuchen, New Jersey native collected 15 stops, elevating her season total to 139.

The Presidents challenged Gossiaux in the third minute to open proceedings, but Gossiaux stood strong. Washington and Jefferson's Amanda Steffey and Kelly Knisel tested the Crimson and Gold keeper before the half but the sides went into the intermission scoreless.

Out of the break, the Presidents increased the offensive pressure and found a difference maker in the 44th minute. The Presidents' Rachel Fromm snuck a low attempt past Gossiaux for the go-ahead score.

Less than two minutes later, W&J continued to pester the Oberlin back line, leading to an insurance goal for the visitors from Pennsylvania. Steffey connected with Knisel to put the Yeowomen behind, 0-2.

The Presidents' front line did everything to keep possession in the Oberlin defensive third, holding the Yeowomen to zero shot attempts in the final 35-minute frame.

As the clock ticked toward the end of regulation, W&J tallied their third score of the game in the 63rd, when Rachel Buyen notched her 11th score of the year.

Washington & Jefferson had a fierce offensive presence, outshooting the Yeowomen 26-3 while tallying 18 shots on goal and keeping the W&J starting goalie, Karlie Baren, untested.

Senior Maureen Coffey led the Oberlin effort with three shots.

Oberlin field hockey returns to action on Saturday, October 22, when they travel to Delaware, Ohio, and the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Their matchup with the OWU Battling Bishops marks the final away match of the year for the Crimson and Gold as they close the 2016 slate with three home games in the comforts of the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Action from Delaware on Saturday is scheduled for 11 a.m.
