Leung Eclipses 3,000 Assists in Win at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - In their second match in three days, Oberlin College volleyball rallied after surrendering the first set to the Lady Barons of Franciscan University and ultimately won in five sets, 20-25, 25-13, 25-18, 29-31, 15-8.

The Lady Barons caught the Yeowomen on their heels and took the first set from their guests, 25-20. After the early stumble, the Crimson and Gold responded by capturing the next two games en route to the five-set win.

The Barons jumped out, 4-0 to open Friday night's bout, but the Yeowomen pulled even at 6-6 with a pair of service aces from Emily Kelkar, on her way to a game-high four aces. A handful of offensive miscues on Oberlin's side of the net let the Lady Barons back in it and they took an 14-8 advantage half way through the frame.

The two sides traded points and the Yeowomen were never able to erase the Franciscan advantage. The Yeowomen grabbed a 5-3 lead out of the gate to open the second and extended their lead 13-7 before the Lady Barons captured two consecutive points to stop the bleeding momentarily.

The Yeowomen responded by capturing the next 11 points while allowing the Lady Barons to tally just four to close the set 25-13 and even the match.

The Crimson and Gold rode the momentum right into a victory in the third set, again holding Franciscan under 20 points. The two sides traded points through the early stages, and the turning point proved to be a kill from Maggie Middleton that notched the set at 14-14. Middleton's score - en route to a seven-kill performance - began a four-point run and the Lady Barons couldn't overcome the deficit.

One-set away from clinching a victory to kickoff the weekend, Franciscan toughed out a win in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth. The Yeowomen took the first three points of the fifth but the Lady Barons answered to grab a 4-3 lead. A four-point run form the Crimson and Gold put them in a favorable position to win, but the Lady Barons refused to got quietly.

A kill from Franciscan's Becca Haven combined with a ball handling error and a service error from Oberlin let the advantage slip to 10-8 in the Yeowomen's favor. A kill by Lexi Mitchell made it 11-8 before Franciscan burnt a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Meredith Leung served up the last four points, including a service ace whil she got aided by Mitchell and Middleton to end the battle in Steubenville.

In the win, Leung led the setup of the Oberlin attack with 31 assists, pushing her over the career milestone of 3,000 assists. Leung, already the all-time assist leader, now has 3,012 career assists and sits just 17 digs shy of 1,000 with 10 against the Lady Barons.

On Friday night, Chang helped set up the Oberlin attack posting 27 in the victory. Leading the offensive effort was Mitchell who notched a season-high 21 kills, followed by Chang and Dana Thomas who tallied 17 and 16 each.

Defensively, Kelkar and first-year Maura Gibbs led the pack with 22 and 21 each. Gibbs' 21 marks a career-high for the rookie. Mitchell and Leung were the other Yeowomen to finish in double figures defensively.

The win at Franciscan moves the Yeowomen to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 in away contests.

Oberlin volleyball will hop over to the Keystone State tomorrow and return to the court with a tri-match hosted by Washington & Jefferson University. The Yeowomen will take Thiel College at 1 p.m. before battling their hosts at 3 p.m.
