OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College men's soccer improved to 4-1-0 in league play as they pacified the Wittenberg University Tigers, 7-0, on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
The Yeomen dominated the run of play from the opening whistle and never looked back. The Crimson and Gold were better in every aspect, especially possession through the first stanza.
The Yeomen drew first blood seven minutes in as
Nick Wertman and
Sam Weiss connected for Weiss's fourth tally of the year. Weiss found space in front of goal and laced a shot past the Tigers starting netminder, Jack Snider.
After the first, the Yeomen went on to notched three goals in the span of 10 minutes. Wertman tallied his 10th of the year in the 19th, followed closely by Weiss in the 27th. Weiss was just in the rirhgt place at the right time as a corner from
Trenton Bulucea found the head of
Jake Frankenfield at the back post and was knocked on to Weiss in front.
Weiss just needed to toe poke it low past Snider for the third score of the contest. Exactly a minute later, it was first-year
Jack McMillin serving up Wertman's second of the night and 11th of the year to all but put the game away in the Yeomen's favor.
As the first half-hour ticked away, McMillin decided to cash in his own scoring opportunity to put the Tigers behind 5-0 at the halftime break.
Out of the intermission, the Yeomen kept a high line and found two more goals before the end of regulation.
On a free kick from 30-plus yards out, Bulucea ripped a curling cross into the box, but neither a Yeoman, Wittenberg defender nor the Tiger's replacement keeper, Tom Roseberry, could get to it and the beautifully struck ball rolled in for the Cleveland Heights native's third score of the year.
The final score of the game went to
Jiadi Cheng, who tallied his first collegiate goal in the Crimson and Gold after tapping home a low pass across the box from Tim Williams.
The commanding victory over Wittenberg sends the Yeomen to 11-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in NCAC play as they head for the home stretch and hopefully into the conference tournament. The win also moves the Yeomen to 7-1-1 within the confines of Fred Shults Field, the only blemish being the controversial loss to Kenyon on Wednesday.
Oberlin men' s soccer returns to the pitch Wednesday, October 19 when they travel to Meadville, Pennsylvania to battle the Allegheny College Gators. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
