Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team controlled the run of play from start to finish, handing the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots a 4-0 defeat on Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.
The win moved the Yeomen's record to 8-1-1 and 2-0-0 in the NCAC. Oberlin is also yet to lose on its on home pitch, improving to 5-0-1 on the season – winning 10 out of their last 13 dating back to the start of 2015. Furthermore, OC has topped Wooster in five straight matches.
Oberlin pounced on the Scots early as reigning NCAC Player of the Week
Nick Wertman finished off a beautiful through-ball from
Trenton Bulucea in the fourth minute.
The Yeomen increased their cushion in the 18
th minute as
Timothy Williams notched his fourth score of the season and 11
th of his career as he become free in the penalty area and sent in a cross from
Adam Chazin-Gray.
Oberlin's work rate continued throughout the first half as they triggered 10 shots in the stanza alone.
Early in the second session the Yeomen were looking to tack on more as Williams had a header saved and
Jake Crim sent a strike just wide of the left post. However, their persistency would pay off as Wertman followed a deflected attempt from
Sam Weiss and sent a piercing strike into the upper right 90 for his second tally of the game.
A mere 60 seconds later in the 61
st minute it was another ricochet-goal that went on the Yeomen's side of the ledger as Williams ripped a shot off the right post that bounced back to the feet of Bulucea in the box and he sent it right back into the twine for his second score of the year.
With a more than comfortable lead in hand, the Yeomen kept their foot on the gas, continuing to attack the Scots' goal, which included an acrobatic bicycle-kick attempt by Wertman in the 80
th minute that sailed just off frame.
The Oberlin rearguard suffocated the Scots attacking front; protecting keeper
Koryn Kraemer who went untested nearly all evening in the clean-sheet victory. He needed to make just one save to secure his third shutout of the season.
The Yeomen finished with a 19-9 margin in shots, including a 9-1 mark in shots on goal. OC also triggered seven corners, while limiting the Scots to one.
Oberlin will conclude its four-match homestand on Wednesday night when it host local rival Case Western Reserve.
