Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned a key conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers 56-40.
Senior guard
Lindsey Bernhardt cashed in 5-of-10 3-pointers en route to finishing with a game-high 19 points. Backcourt mate
Tyler Parlor ripped down a career-high 17 rebounds and matched first-year
Olivia Canning with eight points. The rookie from Sudbury, Massachusetts, also had seven of the Yeowomen's 11 blocks in the win, moving her season total to 54.
The victory marked the third straight for the Yeowomen as they moved to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC. The Tigers dropped to 4-10 and are now tied with Oberlin at 3-4 in league play.
Oberlin jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but the Tigers fought back to even the score at 11-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
However, Oberlin regained control in the second quarter as the Tigers went just 2-of-15 from the floor in the period. The Yeowomen ripped off a 10-0 run to take a 21-11 lead. The Tigers went without a point for 6:33 until a jumper by Alex Kiess finally stopped the bleeding. Despite the scoring lull, Wittenberg trailed by just seven at the break, 25-18.
The Tigers came alive in the third quarter, quickly erasing the deficit with four triple-hits in the first six minutes of the frame – last of which that gave them a 34-31 lead.
The Yeowomen responded right back as Bernhardt dialed in one of her five 3-pointers to put Oberlin back out in front, 37-36, with 1:39 left in the quarter and they would never trail again in the game.
Oberlin built on its 5-point lead heading into the final session as yet another Bernhardt long-range strike increased the gap out to 11 at 47-36. In the meantime the Tigers were held scoreless for over seven minutes, scoring point 36 with 2:12 left in the third before finally getting on the board again when just 5:06 remained in the game to get within nine. Parlor would respond with a jumper and the Yeowomen would lead by double digits the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot 37-percent (20-of-54) from the floor and held Wittenberg to just a 20.6-percent clip (13-of-63). The Yeowomen finished with a 49-38 advantage on the glass and out-scored the Tigers 24-8 in the paint.
Oberlin will look to extend its winning streak to four when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. battle.
