Volleyball Splits on Second Day in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH – Oberlin College volleyball was blanked by Baldwin Wallace in the first contest of the day, but followed with a straight-set, 3-0, victory over host La Roche College in the final match of the day.

Baldwin Wallace grabbed game one, 25-14, before securing the second game 25-15. The Yeowomen tried to stave off a three-set sweep, but the Jackets snuck away with the win, 25-23.

The Yeowomen had a rough go offensively against the Yellow Jackets, hitting only 14 percent, while junior Ave Spencer led the way with eight kills. The sophomore duo of Claudia Scott and Dana Thomas finished with seven each from the outside and middle, respectively.

Junior setter Meredith Leung guided the offense with 31 sets against the Yellow Jackets, while senior libero Molly Powers led the defensive effort with 10 digs.

The second matchup against La Roche College went immensely smoother for the Oberlin women.

The Yeowomen found their form against the Redhawks taking down their hosts, 25-17, 25-13, 25-17.

Spencer once again led Oberlin with a season-high mark of 11 kills. Scott and Thomas followed closely behind with nine and eight kills, respectively. The pair of second-years also tallied a solo block each in the win.

Leung doubled up with another 31-assist performance against the Redhawks, while Spencer and Powers held down the defense by combining for 15 digs.

At the back line, Leung and sophomore Krista Langhans both tabbed a team-high three services aces.

The four-game split in Pittsburgh moves the Yeowomen and head coach Erica Rau to 2-3 on the year as they head back to Ohio.

Oberlin volleyball returns to the court on Wednesday, September 9 as they host a rematch with Baldwin Wallace University. First serve between the Yellow Jackets and Yeowomen is scheduled to go up at 7 p.m.
