Granville, Ohio – The first road game of 2015 didn't go as planned for the Oberlin College football team as the Denison Big Red scored early and often as they cruised to a 45-0 win over the Yeomen on Saturday night at Piper Stadium.
The Big Red scored on their first four possessions of the game and never looked back as all four drives lasted 5:13 or less, putting their high-powered offense on display.
The longest Big Red drive lasted 10 plays and went for 88-yards with it ultimately coming to an end on quarterback Tommy Iammarino's 1-yard sneak for a score.
Following a Yeomen interception, Denison would go up 10-0 on Connor Dunn's 30-yard field goal.
In the second quarter, reining NCAC Offensive Player of the Year DuShawn Brown got into the mix as he caught touchdown passes from 12 and 35 yards out, capping two Big Red drives that lasted under 2:45. The Big would take their 24-0 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Early in the second half, Denison took advantage of great field position following a bad snap on an Oberlin punt attempt. On 4
th-and-goal the Big Red elected to go for it instead of trying a field goal. It appeared that the Yeomen defense came up big with an interception, but apparently the Big Red snuck in a timeout just before the play to give them one more chance. They took advantage of the second chance as Brown snagged his third TD of the game from two yards out.
Denison continued to pour it on as Brown would find the endzone for the fourth time in the game – this one coming from 26 yards out as he became the school's all-time receiving leader. Denison would go on to add one more touchdown in the final minute to cap the game's scoring.
The Yeomen offense mustered just 86 yards, while Denison posted 396 yards.
Oberlin's ground attack never got going as
Justin Williams led the unit with 29 yards on 11 attempts.
Justin Cruz's streak of four straight games with a touchdown dating back to last season came to an end as well.
Senior quarterback
Lucas Poggiali finished 7-of-18 for 64 yards. Sophomore
Federico Consuegra was his top target, finishing with a career-high 38 yards on four catches. Rookie
Robby Reinheimer also snagged two balls for a career-best 25 yards.
Justin Cruz's streak of four straight games with a touchdown dating back to last season came to an end as well.
Defensively
Bennett Jackson led the Yeomen with a career-high 17 tackles (8 solo).
Gabe Edwards also created the first takeaway of the season with an interception in the fourth quarter.
The Big Red moved to 2-0, 1-0 NCAC, while Oberlin dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 1-2 overall.
Oberlin is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. kick.
