Springfield, Ohio – In what could easily be classified as the North Coast Athletic Conference Game of the Year, it was the home standing Wittenberg University Tigers who were able to outlast the Oberlin College Yeowomen, 17-16, in overtime on Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field.
Becca Joseph's wrap-around goal with 26 seconds left in overtime proved to be the difference. Oberlin won the ensuing draw as they looked for the equalizer, but a key check by Logan Waryne forced a turnover and ultimately preserved the win.
Grace Barlow's fifth goal of the game and 32
nd of the season gave the Yeowomen a 16-15 lead with 2:38 left in the six-minute overtime period. However, just over a minute later Waryne would even the score once again.
Oberlin trailed 12-9 with 20 minutes left to play in the second half, but
Sara Phister followed a
Morgan Daruwala goal with two of her own to even the match at the 16:43 mark.
It was Daruwala who gave Oberlin its first lead of the second half as she finished off a
Bronwen Schumacher feed with just 1:26 left to play in regulation to make it a 15-14 Yeowomen advantage.
In the final minute, the Yeowomen defense fended off two free-position attempts, but the Tigers were granted one more with just eight seconds left on the clock. It was Joseph who deposited the game-tying goal to force the extra session.
No more than three goals would ever separate the two teams during the 66 minutes of play. The Yeowomen held two leads in the first half, but ultimately went into the locker room trailing 8-7.
Phister led all scorers with six goals. After Barlow's five, Daruwala and
Suzanna Doak each scored two, while rookie
Sydney Garvis added one.
The Yeowomen controlled possession throughout the match, earning a 26-10 edge in draw controls. Daruwala led the way with seven, while Garvis chipped in with five.
Alexa L'Insalata saw 30 shots out of the Tigers' sticks and made 13 saves, with many coming in key situations.
With the loss, Oberlin had its six-game winning streak come to an end as the Yeowomen are now 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC. Wittenberg improved to 7-2 and 4-0 in league play.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they make the short trek to The College of Wooster. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
