Wooster, Ohio – Oberlin College women's lacrosse traveled to the College of Wooster to battle the Fighting Scots in a Saturday afternoon showdown from John Papp Stadium. After a swwsaw battle, the Yeowomen fell short 12-11, dropping their second straight one-goal game.
The Yeowomen, coming off of a one-point overtime loss at Wittenberg, fell behind early, 3-0 before exploding with three unanswered goals of their own.
Sophomore defender
Michaela Puterbaugh netted the first Oberlin goal with an assist from
Suzanna Doak. At the 18:41 mark, first-year
Sydney Garvis took advantage of a man-up opportunity on a pass from
Maggie Mullard to pull the Yeowomen within one, 3-2.
The equalizer came from Sarah Phister with 17:47 left in the first stanza, but Wooster recaptured the lead just seconds later with a free position shot from Ellie Hudson-Heck. The goal went as a hat-trick for Hudson-Heck as she led all scorers with five goals.
The Scots Ashley Parry put the Yeowomen down two, 5-3, before goals from leading scorer
Grace Barlow and Phister knotted the game at 5-5. Sophomore
Morgan Daruwala gave the Yeowomen their first lead of the match at the 6:06 mark until Hudson-Heck tied it up again 6-6.
The Fighting Scots stole back the lead in the final minute of the first half when Abby Szlachta snuck a shot past goalkeeper
Alexa L'Insalata.
L'Insalata finished with 13 saves in the loss, moving her season saves total to 84.
Oberlin surrendered another goal to Parry to open the second stanza, but Barlow kept the Yeowomen in striking distance with her second of the game with 16:45 to play.
Daruwala netted another free-position shot to tie the game at 8-8 before Garvis registered another goal, assisted by Phister.
With the lead in Oberlin's favor at 10-8, Wooster tallied three unanswered goals to gain the upper hand, 11-10 with under four minutes remaining in regulation.
Barlow took advantage of another free-position opportunity, netting her third of the game to pull the two sides deadlocked at 11-11.
Similar to the loss in Springfield, a late goal from the Tigers dealt the Yeowomen their second North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the season.The now sit at 8-3 overall and are an even 2-2 in the NCAC.
They will look to get back on track when they host Hiram College on Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m.
