Schweighoffer Sets All-Time Hits Record as the Yeomen Drop Two to Wooster

Wooster, Ohio – Senior Jeff Schweighoffer had three hits over the two games to become the all-time hits leader at Oberlin College with 182 and counting. However, the No. 9 ranked Scots of Wooster got the best of the Yeomen, earning 9-1 and 13-6, victories on Saturday afternoon.

The record-breaking hit came in top of the fourth of game two as he delivered an RBI single to right field, marking the 94th run he has driven in during his illustrious four-year career. Schweighoffer past former Yeomen great Ben Putuerbaugh who totaled 181 hits between 2008-11.

In the opener the Scots used two hits and an error to score two runs in the bottom of the first. Yeomen starter Jordan Cohen kept them off the board in the second and third, but Wooster busted the game open with a six-run fourth.

The Scots had just three hits in the inning, but two errors, a walk and a hit-by-pitch all aided the cause. The crushing blows came courtesy of Tyler Schuch and John McLain as Schuch roped a two-run double before McLain followed with a three-run home run.

Oberlin scored its lone run of the game in the top of the seventh as Andrew Hutson plated John Evans with a sac fly to center. Hutson went 3-for-3 in the game, while Justin Cruz was 2-for-3 as they accounted for five of the team's eight hits. The RBI by Hutson was his 37th of the season as he surpassed Kyle Neumeier's single-season school-record mark of 35 on Friday against Hiram. Prior to then, Neumeier's record had stood since 2003.

Kyle Decker went 0-for-2 in the game as his school-record hitting streak of 28 games came to an end.

In the nightcap the Scots wasted no time in picking up where they left off as McLain plated a pair off Yeomen starter Harrison Wollman with a triple to right field. They would open up a 6-0 lead with four more in the second.

However, the Yeomen bats would come alive in the top of the third as they cut the Scots' lead in half, on three hits and an error in the inning. Rookie Derek Martin led off the frame with a single and Cruz then drew a four-pitch walk to set the table for Schweighoffer. The 6-foot-4 right right-hand hitter would come through with the record-tying hit as his belted a two-run opposite-field triple. Decker would then send him across the dish on a single to right.

Oberlin would tie the game with three more in the fourth, taking advantage of three Wooster errors to go along with two hits. Schweighoffer's record-setting single was the lone RBI in the inning.

The Scots would regain the momentum and the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the sixth to open up a 10-6 cushion. They would go on to add three more over the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away for good.

The Yeomen would leave seven stranded over the final five innings, as they were unable to push another run across.

Schweighoffer, Decker and Blaise Dolcemaschio each had two hits for the Yeomen, accounting for six of the team's 11 in the game.

With the sweep, Wooster moved to 28-5 and 12-2 in the NCAC East. Oberlin dropped to 13-22 and 4-10 in league play.

These same two teams will conclude their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader starting at noon.
