Yeomen Swept at Wooster

Wooster, Ohio – Oberlin College baseball dropped their Sunday afternoon doubleheader at the no. 9 ranked College of Wooster as they gear up for the North Coast Athletic Conference crossover weekend.

The always-dangerous Scots took game one, 7-4 before taking the later matchup, 7-6.

The Yeomen jumped on the Scots with three runs in the top of the first as Jeff Schweighoffer led off the game with a double and would later score on an error by the Wooster right fielder. Fellow senior Danny Baldocchi then belted his first home run of the season with a two-out two-run bomb over the wall in left center.

Rookie Milo Sklar made his first-career start on the mound and worked a 1-2-3 first. Wooster would plate an unearned run in the second and eventually take a 4-3 lead with three runs in the third on two hits and an Oberlin error. Jamie Lackner had a two-run triple in the inning and would later score on a field pickoff attempt.

Oberlin got back to even in the top of the fourth as Benjamin Whitener led off the inning with a towering solo home run over the wall in right.

The Scots would post a single tally in the home half of the fourth on Jake Fling's two-out infield single. They would also add solo runs in the fifth and sixth.

Oberlin never really threatened after the fourth as Schweighoffer, who finished with three of the Yeomen's seven hits, led off the fifth with a single, but was erased on a pick-off. Rookie Sam Harris had a one-out double in the sixth, but was left stranded.

Sklar went 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and six runs (four earned). Command was an issue as he walked five and struck out three. He is now 1-4 on the year.

Oberlin took another early lead over the Scots with three runs in the top of the first.

Senior Andrew Hutson tallied the first Oberlin run with an RBI single to the right field. A Kyle Decker double tacked on the second Yeomen run before Mike Masella banged an RBI single up the middle, scoring Decker.

The Scots struck back with one run in the second off of starter Macabe Camps. An RBI single from Jake Kail got the Scots on the board, while a two-run home run from Wooster's senior Frank Vance tied the game at 3-3.

A two RBI single up the middle gave the Scots a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Yeomen trimmed the Scots lead to one when senior Mitch Novak smacked an RBI single into right field, plating Decker.

A Ben Whitener single through the right side pulled the game back even 5-5 in the eighth. Fellow senior Ryan Bliss gave Oberlin a 6-5 advantage in the top of the ninth.

The Yeomen's one-run lead would be erased in dramatic fashion. With two outs against the Scots, Wooster's senior John McLain bashed a two-run walk-off home run down the left field line to close out game two.

The Yeomen will take the following week off from competition to prepare for the NCAC crossover games this coming weekend.

Action is set to begin on Saturday, May 2, with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
