Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin college women's lacrosse celebrated Senior Day on Bailey Field as they hosted the 6-8, 3-2 NCAC Big Red of Denison University.
A late surge from the Big Red soured Senior Day as the Yeowomen fell, 15-8.
The loss moves Oberlin to 9-4 and an even 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
The two sides went into the half tied, 5-5, after 30 minutes of play. However, it was a 10-goal second half that lifted the Big Red over the Yeowomen.
Junior
Suzanna Doak led Oberlin offensively with a first-half hat trick. Doak assisted on the first goal of the game from leading scorer
Grace Barlow, who put the Yeowomen ahead 4:47 into the match.
Doak netted her first two goals of the half after the Big Red used two unanswered scores to take a 2-1 lead.
Doak pulled the Oberlin women out front, 3-2 with her second of the game and 23
rd of the season. Following another Denison score, Barlow found the twine for the second time with 9:44 remaining in the half.
With the match tied, 4-4, Doak snuck another shot past the Denison goalkeeper, Becca Jones, giving the Yeowomen a brief 5-4 lead.
With time expiring in the half, the Big Red's Claudi Rafi blasted a shot past
Alexa L'Insalata to bring the half to an end and the game to a 5-5 tie.
Three unanswered goals from Denison opened the half before sophomore
Sara Phister snapped the drought. Phister's score made it 8-6 in favor of the Big Red, which was a manageable deficit to overcome. Unfortunately, the Big Red got red hot and netted five more unanswered goals to move ahead 13-6.
At the 6:47 mark,
Natalie Rauchle found Oberlin's seventh goal of the night. Denison struck with two more quick scores from Kelsey Wright and Leah Israel before Phister netted her 34
th of the season to close out the game.
The Yeowomen will push on and host Allegheny College in their final home matchup of the season on Wednesday, April 22.
The Gators and Yeowomen will start their mid-week NCAC bout at 7 p.m. under the lights of the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
