Oberlin, Ohio – McKenzie Bell's game-winning goal with six seconds remaining left the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team in shock as the visiting Allegheny College Gators escaped town with an 11-10 win over the Yeowomen on Wednesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The result marked the Yeowomen's third one-goal loss of the season with the other two coming against Wittenberg and Wooster. However, tonight's outcome could have been different as Oberlin had three goals waived off for shooting space violations on Allegheny and one other erased for an illegal stick.
Following two of the shooting space violations, Gators' keeper Kaelin Clogan saved the ensuing free-position shots as she finished with 13 stops on the night.
Kelsey Rodgers, who assisted on the game-winning goal, took a feed from Bell and deposited it into the net for her 44th score of the year to make it a 9-6 Allegheny lead with 11:22 left to play. However, the Yeowomen would not go down without a fight.
A free-position goal from
Sara Phister and two from
Maggie Mullard would tie the game at 9-9 at the 4:51 mark. Shortly thereafter, the Gators' Jackie Marrow would put Allegheny out in front with her fourth score of the game.
With 3:04 to go, Phister would cap off her hat trick performance with another 8-meter goal to setup a thrilling finish.
Suzanna Doak would secure the draw control following the game-tying goal and from there the Yeowomen worked the clock down before calling a timeout with 46 seconds to go. Unfortunately, following the stoppage, an errant pass went out of bounds to give the ball back to the Gators with 17 seconds to go.
After an Oberlin foul, the Gators quickly worked the ball down field as Rodgers found Bell streaking to middle for her 29
th goal of the year.
The Gators held leads of 3-0 and 5-2 in the first half and ultimately took a 5-4 lead into the intermission as
Jodi Helsel went coast-to-coast for a score before rookie
Natalie Rauchle cashed in her first of two goals with 74 seconds left in the half.
The Gators also had a three-goal leads of 8-5 and 9-6 in the second half before the Yeowomen battled back.
Mullard matched Phister with a team-high three goals, while
Morgan Daruwala secured a game-high eight draws.
As a team Oberlin out-shot Allegheny 29-23, won the ground ball battle 26-19 and won 18 of the game's 22 draws.
Alexa L'Insalata made eight saves over 60 minutes of work to run her season total to 114.
With the loss, Oberlin fell to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC. Allegheny improved to 6-9 and are now an identical 3-4 in the conference play.
The Yeowomen will be playing for their potential fate in the NCAC Tournament when they travel to Kenyon on Saturday afternoon. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
