Gators Take Two From the Yeomen

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team had a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning of game one, but couldn't make it stand up, and in game two the visiting Allegheny College Gators broke it open late as they won both games over the Yeomen by the scores of 10-7 and 8-2 on Saturday afternoon at Dill Field.

In the lid-lifter Yeomen pitchers Kyle Dominy and Milo Sklar were victimized by some subpar defense as four errors resulted in just three of the Gators' 10 runs being earned.

The extra pitches thrown due to the extra outs given resulted in Dominy leaving the game after just 4.2 innings with 101 pitches.  He scattered nine hits and three walks, allowing six runs with just one being earned. However, his teammates eventually took him off the hook for the decision.

Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Yeomen's chances were dwindling, but senior Ryan Bliss injected new life into the team with a clutch two-out three-run double to the gap in left center to tie the game.

After Sklar (1-2) worked a perfect top half of the sixth, senior Kyle Decker would put him in line for the win in the bottom of the inning with a an RBI double to right field that scored Justin Cruz as he led off with a single.

Unfortunately, the Yeomen advantage was extremely short-lived as Sklar got into some trouble in the seventh. The Gators put two on with one out for Dan Bonnett who capped his 3-for-4 performance with an RBI single to right field to tie the game. Zach Gray would then put the Gators out in front with another run-producing single to left before they would add two more runs on a sac fly and an error.

Oberlin did not threaten in the bottom of the seventh as Jameson Murray retired the side in order to move to 1-1 on the year.

The game started with the Yeomen scratching out a run in the home-half of the first on an RBI groundout by Benjamin Whitener. Following two Allegheny runs in the top of the second, the Yeomen would answer right back in the bottom of the frame as Jeff Schweighoffer belted a towering two-run home run over the wall in left center to make it 3-2.

Allegheny would ultimately make it a 6-3 game with three in the fourth and one in the fifth before the Yeomen found a way to get back in it.

In the nightcap the Yeomen offense mustered just five hits, but a strong pitching performance from freshman Sean Kiley (3-2) kept them in it till the end. The Yeomen rookie scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs over six-plus innings of work. However, he was very efficient throughout as he threw just 64 pitches. Unfortunately, his one big mistake came in the top off the sixth when Adam Bronson turned on an inside pitch and hit it over the wall in left for a key two-out two-run home run to make it a 4-2 Gators' lead.

The Yeomen struck first, plating a single tally in the second on a double to left field by Bliss to score Whitener.

In the third, a double play that was not turned by the Yeomen defense ultimately cost them a run as Gray took advantage with a two-out RBI single to right center to tie the game.

The Gators would use a pair of hits to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth, but the Yeomen responded right back as Brian Hemmert led off the frame with a double to left. He would later steal third and score on a sac fly by freshman Sam Harris.

Following Bronson's home run in the sixth, the Yeomen had just one hit in innings six through nine, which was a bunt single by Bliss in the seventh.

Allegheny would go on to score four in the ninth on Jacob Shick's grand slam to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Decker, who had two hits in game one, was 1-for-4 in game two to extend his hitting streak to 24 games.

Prior tomorrow's series-ending doubleheader, the Yeomen will honor their eight senior members. Fans should note that first pitch of game one is at 10 a.m.
