Series Stats vs. Allegheny (4 Games) - PDF
Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team honored its eight seniors prior to first pitch, but the visiting Allegheny College Gators put a damper on the celebration, defeating the Yeomen 7-6 and 16-12 on Sunday afternoon at Dill Field.
The end of game one was nearly a déjà vu situation for the Yeomen from game one on Saturday. In the top of the seventh with the score tied at 4-4, a two-out Yeomen error allowed the go-ahead run to score and the Gators would tack on two more following the miscue to grab a 7-4 lead.
However, Oberlin put up strong fight in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Following a walk to
Andrew Hutson, fellow senior
Benjamin Whitener roped a double to the gap in right center to score pinch runner
Sam Harris. Senior
Danny Baldocchi followed with another RBI single through the right side. A walk to
Ryan Bliss resulted in relief pitcher Zach Hale being lifted for Jameson Murray, who came in to face
Mitch Novak with runners on first and second. Murray would get Novak to pop-up a 1-0 pitch to second base to end the game.
With the start time pushed up to 10 a.m., it appeared that the Yeomen bats were still sleeping in the early going as they had just one hit until the home half of the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, Allegheny opened up a 4-0 lead off of Yeomen starter
Harrison Wollman as they scored one in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth.
However, the Yeomen would finally come to life, using three hits and two Allegheny errors to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth. Senior
Jeff Schweighoffer delivered an RBI single to left and senior
Kyle Decker then drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead in half. Hutson would then come through with a hard-hit two-run single back up the middle to tie the game.
After Wollman worked five innings, freshman
Milo Sklar pitched a clean sixth. After the Yeomen went quietly in the home half of the inning, Sklar was victimized by the error in the seventh as he ultimately suffered he second straight tough-luck loss in as many days to fall to 1-3 on the year.
In game two the Gators and Yeomen combined for 31 hits and 28 runs in three hours and 43 minutes. Bliss and Whitener led the Yeomen's 14-hit attack with three apiece while Schweighoffer and Baldocchi added two each.
The two teams traded a pair of runs each in the first before the Gators added two more in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Yeomen erupted for a five-run second to claim a 7-4 cushion.
Justin Cruz and Schweighoffer had RBI singles, while Decker plated another run on a sac fly to deep right with Cruz scoring all the way from second on the play. After Sweighoffer scored on a passed ball, Hutson hit a towering solo home run over the wall in left for his second of the year.
After another Gators' run in the third, it was their turn to score five in the fourth to take a 10-7 lead. Oberlin answered back with a pair of its own in the bottom of the frame on run-producing singles from Whitener and Baldocchi to make it a one-run game.
After six innings, the Gators led 11-10 as the two teams posted single tallies in the inning. The Yeomen run came courtesy of an RBI single back up the box by Bliss.
Unfortunately, Allegheny would create some separation with three runs in the seventh with the big blow coming courtesy of Robert DiMaggio's two-run double.
One of six Yeomen errors in the game allowed the Gators to score two more unearned runs in the ninth.
The Yeomen made some hay in the bottom of the ninth as
Brian Hemmert had an RBI single and Schweighoffer came through with a sac fly, but it was too little too late.
The Yeomen used eight pitchers in the game, with
Jordan Cohen (1-5) ultimately being saddled with the loss.
The Yeomen have now lost five in a row, falling to 11-20 overall and 2-8 in the NCAC East. Allegheny has won 10 straight, improving to 17-11 and 10-3 in league play.
Oberlin will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Hiram College for a critical twinbill to complete their four-game series. The Terriers took the first two from the Yeomen back on April 4.
