Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team turned in a commanding performance, defeating the visiting DePauw University Tigers, 12-5, in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The Yeowomen raced out to a 6-0 lead midway through the first half and never looked back.
Grace Barlow continued her torrid scoring pace, netting yet another hat trick in the win. All three of her tallies came in the first half as she now has 16 scores on the season.
Just seconds into the game, Sophomore
Hannah Heinke-Green cashed in her first goal of the season to get the Oberlin attack going. Barlow then followed with a pair of goals with assists coming from Heinke-Green and
Suzanna Doak as Oberlin led 3-0 less than three minutes into the contest.
Senior
Kate Hanick got into the mix with back-to-back deposits into the back of the cage and following a DePauw score, Barlow registered her third goal with the help of a
Michaela Puterbaugh feed to make it a 7-1 Oberlin advantage at the half.
After two Tigers' goals to start the second half, Oberlin answered right back with sophomore
Sara Phister netting her first goal of the half as she finished off a feed from rookie
Sydney Garvis. Garvis then followed with a goal of her own to extend the Oberlin cushion to six at 9-3.
The two foes would trade 8-meter goals with the Yeowomen score coming out of the stick of senior
Bronwen Schumacher. First-year
Natalie Rauchle would later contribute her fourth goal of the season, while Phister capped the game's scoring with her 11
th score of the year as she finished off a pass from
Marissa Maxfield.
Alexa L'Insalata had a big day in the cage as she turned away a season-high 15 shots from the Tigers.
Morgan Daruwala led the Yeowomen on the draw with five, while
Sloane Garelick spearheaded the defense with nine ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Oberlin finished with a 32-24 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle 31-22.
The Yeowomen, who moved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, will now travel to the great Northwest for three games over spring break. They will first take on the University of Puget Sound on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. EST.
