Richmond, Indiana – The Oberlin College baseball team suffered a three-game series sweep at the hands of Earlham College, dropping the final game of the series 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Sadler Stadium.
The Quakers moved to 8-1 on the season, while the Yeomen return home with a mark of 1-4.
Starting pitching continued to be an area of concern for Oberlin as
Julian Sawhill lasted just an inning and a third after allowing five runs on two hits, three walks and two hit batters. However, rookie reliever
Milo Sklar kept the Yeomen in the game with a masterful performance out of the pen as he tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless ball and allowed just two hits along the way.
Andrew Hutson came through with a two-out RBI single in the first to score
Kyle Decker, but the Quakers answered right back with a sac fly in the bottom of the inning.
In the second, the first two Quaker hitters would reach via a hit by pitch and a walk to set the table for what turned out to be a four-run inning. The first run came across on a wild pitch and Thomas Rea would then follow with a two-run single.
Oberlin cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fifth as
Justin Cruz delivered a sac fly to left that scored
Danny Baldocchi, who started the inning with a leadoff single to right. However, the damage could have been worse for the Quakers as the Yeomen stranded the bases loaded.
Sklar continued to shut down the Quakers in the sixth and
Jordan Cohen did the same in the seventh to keep the Yeomen within striking distance.
The Yeomen offense rewarded their teammates' efforts by tying the game in the top of the eighth. Decker got the rally started with a double to center field and
Jeff Schweighoffer would follow with an RBI single to center as well. Following an RBI groundout by Hutson, the Yeomen took advantage of an Earlham error to tie the game.
After two quick outs by Cohen in the home half of the eighth, Ethan Bailey doubled to right field and would come around to score on Nate Lynch's RBI single to left field to put the Quakers back out in front.
Oberlin had one last chance in the ninth, but the side was set down in order to end the game.
The Yeomen are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they will host Wilmington College at nearby All-Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
