Yeomen Head into Spring Break with a Sweep of Wilmington

Avon, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Wilmington College behind masterful pitching in game one and strong hitting in game two, securing victories by the scores of 5-2 and 12-4 on Tuesday afternoon at All-Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.

In the lid-lifter Freshman Sean Kiley turned in an amazing performance in his collegiate debut, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs over six innings of work en route to securing his first collegiate win. The right-handed rookie threw 75 pitches, 55 of which were strikes (73%). He fanned four and walked just one.  Sophomore Macabe Camps then worked a scoreless seventh for his first-career save.

The Quakers struck first, posting single tallies in the fourth and fifth thanks to a Yeomen error in each inning. However, Oberlin would square the game at 2-2 in the home-half of the fifth. First-year Sam Harris started the rally with a one-out double to right center for his first-career hit. Following a Quakers' error, senior Jeff Schweighoffer would come through with a two-run double down the right field line to score Harris and Kyle Decker.

Kiley worked around a one-out error in the sixth and his teammates came through with the run support he deserved in the bottom of the frame. Following a Wilmington error and a sac bunt to start the inning, senior Mitch Novak delivered his biggest hit of the season with a two-RBI triple to the gap in right center to put the Yeomen out in front for good. Decker would then second Novak across on a squeeze bunt to give the Yeomen some added insurance.

After walking the first two hitters to start the seventh, Camps settled in and earned a big strikeout before getting the next two Quakers to ground out to end the game.

After registering five hits in game one, the Yeomen bats finally came to life in the nightcap as they erupted for 15 hits in the win. Novak, Mike Masella, Schweighoffer, Andrew Hutson, Quin Butler and Brian Hemmert each had two hits in the game.

The Quakers scratched a run across in the top of the first, but the Yeomen would respond with a four-run second. Harris came through with a clutch two-out two-run single back up the middle and later in the inning Novak did the same with a two-RBI single through the left side to make it 4-1.

In the top of the fourth, Wilmington would tie the game at 4-4 as the first three hitters of the inning all walked and eventually came around to score on a sac fly, single and ground-rule double.

In the fifth, Wilmington was threatening to take the lead with the base loaded and one out, but sophomore Ben Lovett entered on the mound and quickly put an end to the potential danger, striking out Daniel Hayes and inducing a fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Jake Robinson to end the inning on just four pitches.

Lovett would earn the win as the Yeomen recaptured the lead in the fifth inning, plating three runs on four hits and an error. Masella, who started the inning with a single, would later score on a wild pitch. Colin Brown then registered an RBI ground ball and Butler followed with a run-producing single to right field that sent Hutson across the dish.

The Yeomen would tack on three more in the sixth as Hemmert and Novak started the inning with back-to-back doubles before Hutson recorded a two-run single back up the box to make it 10-4.

In the seventh the Yeomen would keep the offensive barrage rolling as rookie Derek Martin recorded his first career RBI with a single through the right side. Schweighoffer would then drop in a bloop-double to score Martin.

Wilmington starter Derek Peters (0-2) took the loss as he went 4-plus innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

In addition to Lovett, Ryan Bliss, Kelby Spring, Noah Lipshie and Charlie Goetz each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Yeomen starter Justin Kidd.

The Yeomen will now gear up for their annual spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona, where they will play 14 games over seven days starting on March 21 against Hamline.
