Richmond, Indiana - The Oberlin College baseball team dropped a pair of nine-inning games on Saturday afternoon, falling 14-8 in game one and 24-4 in game two to the Earlham College Quakers.
With the sweep the Quakers ran their record to 7-1 on the year, while the Yeomen moved to 1-3.
Offense was plentiful in the lid-lifter as both teams combined for 24 hits with 10 coming off the bats of Yeomen hitters.
Andrew Hutson,
Kyle Decker and
Blaise Dolcemaschio led Oberlin with two hits each.
While the Yeomen scored early and often, their pitching staff was unable to limit the response runs by the Quakers.
Oberlin took advantage of two errors in the first inning to push one across, but Earlham did a good job in limiting the damage as the Yeomen left the bases loaded.
The Quakers used a pair of hits to get back to even in the home half of the first, but the Yeomen answered right back with a 3-spot in the second. Three singles by
Justin Cruz, Dolcemaschio and
Mitch Novak to start the inning quickly put Oberlin back out in front. Following a sac bunt, Hutson then came through with a clutch two-out two-run double down the right field line to make it a 4-1 Yeomen lead.
However, once again the Quakers would respond, using three hits, a walk and a hitter batter to plate two runs in the bottom of the second. Yeomen starter
Kyle Dominy did induce an inning-ending double play to escape with the lead still intact.
The Quakers tied the game at 4-4 in the third, but the Yeomen would retake the lead with a four-run fifth. Novak worked a four-pitch bases-loaded walk to plate the first run of the frame and senior
Jeff Schweighoffer would later follow with a two-RBI single to center. Hutson would then tack on his third RBI of the game, scoring Novak on a single to center, but was thrown out a second to eventually end the inning, but not before the Yeomen grabbed an 8-4 advantage.
It was déjà vu for Yeomen fans as the four-run cushion was again gone in a blink as Earlham answered right back with three runs of its own. It was a sloppy inning for the Yeomen defensively as the only hit of the frame was an infield single. However, a walk, error, wild pitch and sac fly all combined to do them in.
The Yeomen went quietly in the sixth, but the Quaker bats were still going as they erupted for four runs on five hits to take the lead for good. Earlham would go on to touch up the Yeomen bullpen for three more in the seventh to effectively put the game away for good.
In the nightcap the Quakers picked up right where they left off, scoring five runs on four hits and an error in the first inning off Yeomen starter
Harrison Wollman.
The Yeomen pushed a single tally across in the third as
Brian Hemmert doubled to right field to start the inning and would later score on a single by Decker.
After settling down in the second and third, Wollman was ultimately chased from the game after recording one out in the fourth. Relief pitcher
Ben Lovett surrendered singles to the next two hitters with all three runs in the inning being charged to Wollman.
The Yeomen bullpen could not stop the bleeding as the Quakers offensive barrage continued the rest of the way.
First-year
Derek Martin recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI with a run-producing single in the sixth. Rookie
Quin Butler also added his first-career RBI in the eighth. In the ninth
Colin Brown scored rookie
Nicholas Morgan on a double to center field.
The Yeomen and Quakers will conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for high noon from Sadler Stadium.
