Yeomen Split Season-Opening Twinbill

Caledonia, MI – The Oberlin College baseball team earned a 12-7 extra-inning win in game one, but dropped the night cap 9-6 to Calvin College on Tuesday afternoon at the Farmer's Insurance Athletic Complex on the campus of Davenport University.

Game One Recap

Both teams were still settling in through the first three innings, but the Yeomen broke through with a four-run fourth. Benjamin Whitener worked a bases-loaded walk to send Kyle Decker home for the game's first run. Sophomore Justin Cruz followed with a sac fly and Danny Baldocchi would come across on a balk call. Junior Blaise Dolcemaschio plated Whitener with a single to left field but was thrown out at second trying to advance on the throw to the plate to end the inning.

Sophomore southpaw Kyle Dominy was cruising through the first three innings, allowing just two hits, but he ran into some trouble in the home-half of the fourth.  The Knights came alive, using five hits to score five runs and take the lead. After three straight singles to start the inning, Nick Steiginga delivered a big blow with a three-run triple to left.

Calvin would take advantage of two Yeomen errors to grab a 6-4 lead after five, but the Yeomen responded with a single tally in the sixth on Dolcemashio's RBI groundout that scored pinch runner Mike Masella.

In the top of the seventh the Yeomen would even the game at 7-7 as senior Andrew Hutson came through with a clutch two-out two-run triple to tie the game.

Junior Jordan Cohen entered on the mound and shutdown the Knights in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Cohen' s teammates rewarded his effort by scoring five runs in the top of the eighth on three hits and two errors. Mitch Novak, Kyle Decker, Jeff Schweighoffer and Masella all had RBI's in the inning.

Cohen then returned to shutdown to the Knights in the bottom of the eighth to complete his second inning of clean work to earn the win.

Game Two Recap

The Yeomen led 5-1 after three innings, but the Knights came charging back, scoring eight runs in innings four through six to steal the win away from the Yeomen.

Hutson belted out a two-run double in the first and Baldocchi did the same in the third as the Yeomen appeared to be in control.

Calvin pushed a run across in the bottom of the third, but Oberlin answered back in the fourth as Brian Carney led off the inning with a triple and later scored.

The Knights chipped away at the 6-1 deficit, plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth, before exploding for five runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth.

The Yeomen never threatened in the sixth or seventh as the Knights were able to salvage the split.

Oberlin will be back in action this weekend when it travels west to Richmond, Indiana to take on Earlham College in a three-game set.
