Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

All-Around Team Effort Propels Oberlin Over Denison in Overtime

Granville, Ohio  - The Oberlin College women's basketball team scored the first eight points of overtime and held off a late Denison comeback to defeat the Big Red, 62-54, on Wednesday night.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Christina Marquette and Lindsey Bernhardt is how Oberlin started the overtime period and Marquette followed with a layup to regain the momentum back from the Big Red. The senior from Huntington Beach, California, scored nine of her 15 points in the extra session.

Despite the quick start the Big Red clawed their way to within four, 55-51, but a dagger triple-hit from Marquette with 90 seconds to go proved to be too much for them to overcome.

Oberlin appeared to be in control for most of the game, opening up an 11-point lead at 34-23 on Anna Moore's show-and-go layup with 13 minutes to go. After the Big Red got within single digits, Oberlin would increase its advantage back to 10 on two separate occasions. A triple from Caroline Hamilton made it 39-29 with 7:35 left to play, while Bernhardt's three with just over five minutes to play pushed the Oberlin cushion to 43-33.

However, the Big Red would not go down without a fight as they used a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 43.

A backdoor layup by Bernhardt that was assisted by Katie Lucaites put the Yeowomen out in front 47-45, but Denison's Gabrielle Nottage would later tie the game with 20 seconds remaining. The Yeowomen had a chance to win it in regulation, but Taylor Lindquist blocked Bernhardt's running jumper at the buzzer.

Bernhardt finished with a team-high 19 points, as she was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. However, it was a team effort tonight as eight different players scored in the game. Moore was also a factor inside as she finished with eight rebounds and eight blocks.

Both teams got off to a slow start as Oberlin was clinging to a 9-6 lead midway through the first half. The Yeowomen would eventually widen the gap, using an 11-4 run that was jump-started by back-to-back buckets from Abby Andrews to take a 20-10 lead with 2:30 left in the half. They would ultimately head into the intermission with a 22-14 advantage.

Oberlin shot 34.8-percent (24-of-69) from the floor, making the most of its opportunities by going 9-of-16 from 3-point range for an impressive 56.3-percent clip.

Jordan Holmes finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Big Red, but overall the Yeowomen defense did a good job in holding them to just 33.8-percent (24-of-71), which included a 1-of-11 showing from long range. Oberlin also forced 17 turnovers in the win.

The Yeowomen are 12-9 overall and 8-4 in the NCAC. The eight victories tie for the most league wins in school history as they went 8-8 in the 1998-99 season.

Oberlin is back in action next Wednesday when it plays host to Allegheny College at 6 p.m.
