Oberlin, Ohio – Christina Marquette and
Lindsey Bernhardt combined for 45 points to lead the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a thrilling, 75-72, win over Allegheny College on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
With the victory, the Yeowomen moved to 13-9 overall and set a new school record for NCAC wins as they are now 9-4 in league play. The previous best of eight league wins happened in the 1998-99 season.
Marquette added seven rebounds and six assists to her 23 points, while Bernhardt cashed in 6-of-9 triple-tries en route to her 22-point performance. Junior guard
Caroline Hamilton continues to be a spark plug off the bench as she added 14 points.
With 2:56 remaining in the game, Hamilton tied the game at 70 with a jumper along the near baseline and 90 seconds later she would put the Yeowomen out in front for good, knocking down two clutch free throws. Following a missed jumper from the Gators, Hamilton dropped in two more freebies to make it a two-possession game with just 19 seconds left on the clock.
Following a quick bucket by Allegheny, Hamilton would split a pair of free throws, giving the Gators life with a potential chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer. However, Emma Pellicano's attempt with one second left was well short.
Oberlin jumped out a 13-6 lead in the early going, but the Gators went into a full-court press that flustered the Yeowomen some. The Yeowomen led 18-13 midway through the opening frame, but the pressure applied by the Allegheny defense allowed them to tie and eventually take the lead. However, it was Oberlin who went into the locker room with a 35-33 cushion at the break.
In the second half no more than four points separated the two teams. In all, the game featured 18 lead changes and 12 ties.
The Yeowomen shot 42.4-percent from the floor, registering 25 makes on 59 attempts. The Gators hoisted 17 more shots as they finished 31-of-76 for a 40.8-percent clip. However, the Yeowomen made up for the shortcoming at the free throw line where they made 18-of-25 (72%) attempts, while the Gators hit just 4-of-9 (44.4) charity tosses.
All five Allegheny starters finished in double figures with Jessica Mrdjenovich leading the way with 18 points. They are now 13-9 overall and 6-7 in the NCAC.
Oberlin is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it host Hiram College at 1 p.m.
