Yeowomen Stumble on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team dropped its regular-season finale, 67-55, to the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Philips Gym.

Despite the setback, the Yeowomen still secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Senior Christina Marquette, who was honored at halftime of the men's game on Saturday, led Oberlin with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Junior guard Lindsey Bernhardt added 18 points as both players combined to shoot 6-of-13 from 3-point land.

However, the Yeowomen hindered their own cause with 25 turnovers, marking the second highest total of the season. The Tigers turned the Oberlin miscues in 23 points. They also finished with a 30-16 advantage in points in the paint.

It was a nip and tuck game in the early going as Bernhardt's fastbreak layup gave Oberlin a 16-11 lead with 10:37 left in the first half. Unfortunately, from that point on the Yeowomen netted just two points over the next nine minutes, which allowed the Tigers to ultimately take a 37-22 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half the Tigers increased the gap out to as many as 21, but the Yeowomen continued to fight to the very end. A 3-pointer from Connie Estevez cut the deficit down to 11, 59-48, with 5:21 remaining in the game. Oberlin later trailed 61-50 at the 4:39 mark, but the Tigers fended off the charge to secure their 20th victory of the season.

Wittenberg, which enters the NCAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed, had four players finish in double figures with Katelyn Haralamos leading the way with a game-high 21 points.

Oberlin shot 41.3-percent (19-of-46) from the floor, which included an 8-of-18 (44.4%) effort from beyond the arc. The Tigers finished at 45.5-percent (22-of-55).

The Oberlin women will now host their first NCAC Tournament game since 1990. As the No. 4 seed, the Yeowomen beat Allegheny 78-56 on February 20, 1990. Two days later the team fell to top-seeded Wittenberg 93-57.

Prior to Tuesday's tip-off, the first 100 fans will be treated to a free burrito and chips from Chipotle. Additionally, the first 200 fans will get a limited edition Squirrels Nest t-shirt.
