Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Drop Quarterfinal Contest to OWU

Oberlin, Ohio – The atmosphere was outstanding as the home crowd came out in support of the record-setting Oberlin College women's basketball team, but in the end the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops spoiled the fun as they earned a, 75-58, win over the Yeowomen in NCAC Quarterfinal action on Tuesday night.

Seeded fourth, Oberlin was hosting its first NCAC Tournament game since 1990, but the fifth-seeded Bishops jumped out to an early lead and would never trail in the game.

With the defeat came an end to era for senior Christina Marquette. One of the greatest players in school history, she ended her career with a 22-point and 7-rebound performance in the tough loss. She departs Oberlin as the all-time leader in scoring (1,743 points) and rebounding (915). Her career free throw percentage of 81.3-percent (309-of-380) is also the best in school history.

The Bishops advance to the league semifinals after shooting 50-percent (33-of-66) from the floor. Emily Julius led a foursome of Bishops in double figures with 24 points, while Sarah McQuade added 16 points and nine assists.

The Bishops cashed in three 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the game to take a quick 11-4 lead. A backdoor layup by Marquette later made it 25-20 at the 6:43 mark.  Kaite Lucaites old fashioned 3-point play cut the deficit to three, 29-26, and a triple-hit from Marquette shrunk the OWU margin down to 31-29 with just under three minutes left in the frame. However, the Bishops ultimately took a 37-31 cushion into the locker room.

Oberlin snatched momentum early in the second half as Lindsey Bernhardt cashed in two three pointers within the first two minutes to tie the game at 39. She finished with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers while going 6-of-7 at the free throw line.

It would remain nip and tuck as Anna Moore's left-handled layup made it a 51-47 OWU advantage with 14:07 remaining in the game. However, the Bishops used an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to open up a 12-point lead. Unfortunately, the gap would only widen from there as the Bishops increased their lead to 21 to put the game away for good.

Oberlin shot just 32.8-percent (20-of-61) and was hindered by 24 turnovers that turned into 29 points for OWU. The Bishops also finished with a 48-20 edge in points in the paint.

Oberlin ends the year at 14-12 overall and 10-6 in the NCAC, marking the most league wins in school history. While the Yeowomen will say goodbye to Marquette, the rest of the roster is slated to return next season.
