Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore
Nathan Cohen netted a career-high 20 points, while
Jack Poyle and
Randy Ollie each added 14 to lift the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a convincing 83-58 win over Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.
Cohen cashed in a career-high six 3-pointers on seven attempts, adding a team-high five assists in the win. Ollie was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor and ripped down 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
As a team the Yeomen shot 55.4-percent (31-of-56), which included an impressive 58.8-percent (10-of-17) showing from beyond the arc. On the other end of the floor, the Yeomen defense created 17 turnovers and held the Terriers to just 26.8-percent (19-of-71) shooting, matching the lowest percentage of any Oberlin opponent this season.
The Yeomen raced out to a 20-7 lead following
Miles Gueno's fast-break layup with 14:23 left on the first-half clock. The Terriers fought back to get within six, 21-15, but the Yeomen quickly regained control with a 16-5 surge to claim a 37-20 lead with just under five minutes left in the opening frame. Oberlin would ultimately head into the locker room with a 47-29 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half the Terriers never really threatened as they would get no closer than 17 points.
Eleven of the 12 Yeomen that checked into the game scored at least two points. Senior
Jesse Neugarten led Oberlin's bench bunch with seven.
Oberlin finished with 17 fast-break points compared to Hiram's four and the Yeomen also netted 25 points off of the Terriers' 17 miscues.
The Yeomen moved to 10-13 overall and 6-10 in the NCAC. Hiram fell to 9-14 and 3-13 in league action.
Oberlin will be back in action on Wednesday night at when it travels to Ohio Wesleyan University. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m.
