Pittsburgh, PA – Senior guard
Lindsey Bernhardt became the eighth player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points, but it wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon as the Carnegie Mellon Tartans used a big second half to defeat the Oberlin College women's basketball team 73-64.
Bernhardt led the Yeowomen with 22 points, hitting 8-of-18 shots, which included a 6-of-12 showing from beyond the arc. The Miami, Florida, native has now scored 1,015 points in her illustrious career.
Caroline Hamilton continued her torrid pace adding 17 points in the setback, but she and Bernhardt were the lone two Yeowomen in double figures.
The loss dropped Oberlin to 5-4 overall while CMU remained unbeaten at 6-0.
The Yeowomen held an early 9-2 lead, but the Tartans battled back to even the score at 14 after one period.
The second quarter started with a 10-3 Yeowomen run that featured triples from
Connie Estevez and Bernhardt to make it a 24-17 Oberlin advantage at the 7:46 mark. The Yeowomen lead would grow to as many as nine, 30-21, on a Bernhardt layup with 3:36 left in the first half. However, it was ultimately just a 36-33 Yeowomen lead at the intermission.
The Tartans took control of the game in the third, using their half-time adjustments to out-score Oberlin 25-17 in the period. Oberlin led by as many as seven in the frame, but the Tartans would grab their first lead since the first quarter on Zoe Zawisa's jumper to make it 50-49 with a shade under three minutes remaining in the quarter.
CMU took a 58-53 advantage into the fourth and staved off a Yeowomen comeback to keep their perfect record intact. One Bernhardt's six 3-pointers would give Oberlin a short-lived 61-60 lead with 5:25 left to play, but Oberlin would go ice cold from that point on, failing to score again until just 27 seconds were left on the clock.
Four Tartans finished in double figures, led by a game-high 28 points from Lisa Murphy, who also ripped down a game-best 12 rebounds.
Oberlin shot 38-percent (25-of-66) from the field and was an impressive 12-of-26 (46.2%) from 3-point land. However, the Yeowomen attempted just two free throws the entire game – making both. The Tartans checked in at 46.4-percent, connecting on 32 of the 69 shots they hoisted.
The Yewowomen return home on Wednesday night to host The College of Wooster at 7:30 p.m.
