FREDERICK, Md. – Oberlin College women's basketball concluded their holiday weekend in Washington, D.C. with a comfortable 13-point victory over the Hood College Blazers, 59-46.
The first quarter was a teeter-totter affair with 11 lead changes in the opening nine minutes. Trailing 14-13 with 1:00 on the clock, Hood snapped off a 6-0 run to close the initial ten-minute frame with a 19-14 advantage.
The Yeowomen outscored the Blazers in the second 13-6, with the help of
Tyler Parlor,
Caroline Hamilton and
Eleanor Van Buren. Parlor finished with five in the quarter, while a Van Buren three-ball catapulted the Yeowomen to their largest lead of the half, 26-22, with 4:00 remaining.
After helping the Yeowomen to a halftime lead, Parlor went on to her first double-double performance of the year. The Detroit, Michigan native finished with 11 points on 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the floor and 14 rebounds, marking a season-high for the second-year. Parlor also registered three assists and one steal in the win.
Van Buren finished in double-figures for the first time this season, finishing with 10 points on 4-of-9 (44.4%) shooting including 2-of-4 (50%) from three range.
Hamilton led the Oberlin women for the second consecutive night, leading all-scorers with 17 points (6-of-16; 37.5%), two rebounds, a team-high seven assists and two steals.
First-year
Olivia Canning was the fourth Yeowomen to finish in double-figures as she composed her first collegiate double-double. The Sudbury, Massachusetts native hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds to accompany her 10 points on 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the field. Canning also tossed away four Blazers shots, for a team-high.
With a 27-25 lead out of the halftime break, the Blazers hustled back to a four-point lead of their own, 38-34, in the opening 5 minutes. Two three-pointers from Hamilton helped the Yeowomen to a 10-2 scoring run to close the third with a 44-40 lead.
The final ten-minute frame was all Oberlin, as the Yeowomen outplayed the Blazers to a 13-point victory, outscoring Hood, 15-6 in the fourth.
As a unit, the Yeowomen outworked the Blazers, shooting 25-of-66 (37.9%) from the floor compared to Hood's 18-of-47 (26.9%) performance from the field. Oberlin capitalized on 18 points coming from Hood turnovers, but the Blazer bench finished with a 21-14 advantage in bench points.
The Yeowomen move ahead to 5-2 overall with the two wins over Gallaudet and Hood to conclude the opening non-conference matchups. Headman

The Big Red will host Oberlin women's basketball on Wednesday, December 2 to open NCAC play for both squads.
