Yeowomen Use Big Second Quarter to Take Down Gallaudet

WASHINGTON D.C. – The Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the Gallaudet University Bison, 74-60, in the first matchup of a weekend swing in our nation's capital.
 
Senior guard Caroline Hamilton, first-year Olivia Canning and senior Lindsey Bernhardt finished in double-figures scoring to propel the Yeowomen to 4-2 on the year.
 
Hamilton led the Oberlin women with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-15 (53.3%) from the floor and 7-of-11 (63.6%) from beyond the arc. The North Yarmouth, Maine native hauled in five rebounds, registered a team-high three steals and dished out three assists to accompany her personal-best scoring performance.
 
Canning struck for double-figures for the first time in the Crimson and Gold, finishing with 16 against the Bison. The tall, lengthy center went 7-of-9 (77.7%) from the field, while swatting a game-high four blocks, and pulling down seven rebounds.
 
Bernhardt inched closer to the 1,000-career point threshold with 11 in the win in D.C. Bernhardt landed 4-of-11 (36.4%) from the floor including 3 three-balls. The native of Miami, Florida now has 973 career points as a Yeowomen.
 
Despite finishing out of double-figures scoring, second-year Tyler Parlor followed up her career-high performance fromTuesday night with a game-high, 10-rebound performance. Parlor led the team in rebounds and assists with six, while recording a steal and six points on 3-of-5 (60%) shooting.
 
Oberlin struggled from the floor in the first ten minutes, as the Bison took a three-point advantage, 13-10, into the second quarter.
 
The Yeowomen caught fire offensively in the out of the first break, composing a 17-4 run in 5:31 of the second. Leading, 27-17, four different Yeowomen added buckets to close the first stanza with a 35-21 advantage. Head coach Kerry Jenkins crew ignited for a 25-point second quarter, while smothering Gallaudet in the defensive end and holding the Bison's to just eight points.
 
The Bison cut the Oberlin lead to 47-35 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter, but the Yeowomen trimmed it back to a 14-point game, 52-38, to close out the third period.
 
Oberlin opened the final session with a trey from Bernhardt nine seconds in. The Yeowomen chokehold would extend to as much as 20-points in the next four minutes, but the Bison remained resilient in the closing minutes, to cut their deficit back to 14 as time expired.
 
As a unit, the Oberlin bench outworked the Bison, 16-4, while the Yeowomen also won the battle down low with 34 points in the paint compared the Gallaudet's 26. Despite some hiccups in the first quarter, the Yeowomen finished 30-of-68 (44.1%) and 10-of-25 (40%) from three range. Gallaudet shot 28-of-76 (36.8%) from the floor and were an unsuccessful 0-of-7 on 3-point attempts.
 
The Bison's Zamica Gage led all scorers with 35 points on 16-of-25 (64%) shooting, while also leading her squad with nine boards and a game-high seven steals.
 
Oberlin women's basketball will hang around the D.C. area for the night to take on Hood College Sunday afternoon before traveling back west.
 
Tipoff from Frederick, Maryland between the Blazers and Yeowomen is slated for 1 p.m.
