Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Sting No. 25 Yellow Jackets with Late Score

OBERLIN, Ohio – With less than two seconds remaining in regulation, a tenacious layup from senior guard Lindsey Bernhardt propelled the the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a 63-61 victory over the No. 25 Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.

It was a close matchup with two eerily similar squads featuring tall length post players and quick, athletic guards. Out of the gate, the Yeowomen grabbed an early lead, 5-2 with a three-ball from first-year Alex Stipano.

Oberlin took their advantage to 9-8, 5:22 into the first quarter after senior Caroline Hamilton fed Katie Lucaites who knocked down a mid-range jumper. However, the Yellow Jackets immediately answered with a pair of free throws in the ensuing possession to take a 10-9 lead.

The Yeowomen would hang around, but trailed for the remainder of the first half. After the first 10 minutes of action, Baldwin Wallace led 18-13.

BW stayed in front early in the second quarter, extending their lead to as much as 12 with 4:10 remaining. Head coach Kerry Jenkins' crew hit key shots at the right time to trim the Yellow Jacket advantage to six, 35-29, at the half.

The second half opened with more back-and-forth play as the Yeowomen cut the deficit to four, 37-33, only for BW to storm back to a 10-point lead, 45-35 half way through the third.

Oberlin women used a 12-6 run to close the quarter trailing by four, 51-47. Oberlin pulled back to even the score at 51, with 8:04 remaining, but let the lead slip away again.

Despite trailing nearly all game, the Yeowomen fought back to a lead, 56-55, after Tyler Parlor hauled in a missed jumper from BW's Katie Smith and went coast-to-coast for a go-ahead layup.

Parlor would finish with a career-high 17 points and was instrumental down the stretch to earn Jenkins and company their sixth victory over Baldwin Wallace in program history. Her career scoring mark was complimented by a 6-of-9 (66%) performance from the floor, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

The Yellow Jackets used a 5-0 run in the next three minutes to once again put the Yeowomen behind late. A BW foul under the hoop sent Lucaites to the line with 2:40 remaining and the Greenwood, Indiana, native knocked down both foul shots lessening the Yellow Jackets advantage to three, 61-58.

After two layups that landed off the mark for BW, a monstrous three-pointer from Eleanor Van Buren brought the game to it's final tie, 61-61. The Yellow Jackets missed two big opportunities to recapture an advantage, and a costly turnover breathed life into the Yeowomen.

Following a timeout with 14 ticks left on the clock, Bernhardt was sent to the line, but missed both attempts. However, sophomore Abby Andrews hauled in the vital offensive rebound with six seconds left.

Off of an inbound opportunity, Bernhardt beat her marker running hard down the baseline, received the inbound from Parlor and went up for the go-ahead layup with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

BW skipper Cheri Harrer burned her final 30-second timeout to advance the ball and offer a catch and shoot opportunity in their offensive end. Sydney Clark fed a brilliantly placed pass to Clara Lemmon as time expired but Lemmon couldn't hit the mark sending the Oberlin bench and Philips Gymnasium into a frenzy.

Bernhardt finished behind Parlor with 15 points on 7-of-10 from the line, three assists and four rebounds.

The victory propels the Yeowomen to 3-2 overall as they head to Washington D.C. for the holiday weekend. Oberlin will battle Gallaudet University on Saturday, November 28, before taking on Hood College on Sunday afternoon.
