Kalamazoo, MI – Five Yeomen scored in double figures to lead the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a, 91-81, road win at Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Athletic Center.
Junior
Nathan Cohen led the offense with a career-high 21 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting. He was also a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe. Classmate
Jack Poyle, who was 9-of-10 at the free throw line, added 19 points and 10 rebounds to secure his first-career double-double.
Senior center
Randy Ollie impressed on the inside with 14 points, while
Zach Meyers and
Zach Moo Young chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The first half was tightly contested on both sides as the first 20 minutes featured 16 lead changes and eight ties. In the closing seconds of the frame a 3-pointer from Cohen and a free throw by Poyle would give the Yeomen a 39-36 lead at the intermission.
However, in the second half it was a much different story as Oberlin took complete control of the game. A 12-5 Yeomen run in the first four minutes of the session gave them a 51-41 lead.
Oberlin's defensive pressure would continue, allowing them to open an 18-point advantage, 66-48, with 10:38 left in the game.
Scott Miller's triple-hit at the 5:14 mark pushed the lead out to 22, 83-61, and the Yeomen cruised the rest of the way to the finish.
The Yeomen shot 52.8-percent (28-of-53), which included a blistering 58.3-percent (14-of-24) in the second half. Oberlin also did damage at the free throw line, cashing in 28-of-38 freebies for a 73.7-percent success rate.
Oberlin finished with a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint and won the rebounding battle 44-35.
The Yeomen will return home on Tuesday night to host Muskingum University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
