Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team battled the 16
th ranked Spartans of Case Western Reserve for 110 minutes, earning a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field.
The result marks the first tie of the season for both teams with the Yeomen moving to 7-3-1, while Case Western is now 9-1-1.
Nick Wertman's second score of the year forced the extra time, as he sent in a long-range strike from 30-yards out on the far side in the 87
th minute. Both teams had a chance to win it in regulation, but
Sam Weiss saw his shot fly high, while
Koryn Kraemer denied Joshua Prosser's attempt.
The Spartans struck in the 26
th minute on Chris Cvecko's ninth goal of the year. He took a cross from the end line by Michael Balog before sending it in.
The Yeomen tried to find the equalizer before the first-half horn, but Case keeper Calvin Boyle turned away shots by Wertman and
Matthew Bach-Lombardo. They were Oberlin's lone two attempts on frame in the opening stanza.
Early in the second overtime,
John Ingham created space in the middle of the field, but mishit his shot attempt right at Boyle. Weiss later had a shot that Boyle was able corral as well.
Both teams ripped off 16 shots in the match with the Spartans finishing with a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Wertman led OC with five shots, three of which were on target. Case did finish with a 12-6 advantage in corners.
Kraemer, who missed the previous two matches with injury, didn't miss a beat as he matched a season-high with eight saves to run his season total to 42.
Oberlin will return home to host Wabash College on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
