Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team controlled the run of play for all 90 minutes, earning a 2-0 victory over the Wittenberg University Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
The triumph put the Yeomen back in the win column for the first time since October 3 and it also reinserts them into mix for a potential NCAC Tournament berth in the coming weeks.
Oberlin, which scored both its goals in the second half, displayed its dominance throughout the match, finishing with an 18-6 edge in shots, which included an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Yeomen also out-worked the Tigers to a 9-3 margin in corner kicks.
Sophomore
Jesse Lauritsen would break the 0-0 stalemate in the 57
th minute with his second goal of the season. It came off an Oberlin throw-in that was flicked by
Timothy Williams to Lauritsen, who curled his left-footed shot inside the back post.
Following a couple dangerous chances by the Tigers in the final 20 minutes, Oberlin had an opportunity to increase its lead on the courter-attack. In a 3-on-2 situation
John Ingham stopped and chipped a shot over the keeper's head, but it was just a tad too tall as the ball hit the crossbar.
However, Ingham would get his retribution in the 81
st minute as he sent in a piercing strike from 20-yards out that hit off the right post and in for his 12
th goal of the year and 35
th of his illustrious career.
The Tigers first shot on goal didn't come until the 73
rd minute when Alberto Zaragoza forced
Koryn Kraemer to dive to his right to keep his clean sheet intact.
In the 85
th minute Kraemer was again tested by Austin Lewis, but it was no trouble for the rookie as he recorded his second solo shutout of the season.
Ingham led the Yeomen with eight shots, half of which were on frame.
Oberlin will have a short turnaround, as it will host Allegheny College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
