Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Stumble at Hiram

Hiram, Ohio – Four Yeomen scored in double figures, but it was enough as the Oberlin College men's basketball team dropped an 80-63 decision at Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Nathan Cohen paced the Yeomen attack with 14 points while tying a career-high five assists to go along with a team-best six rebounds. Senior Austin Little matched Cohen with a 5-for-9 shooting performance as he dropped in 13 points as did big man Randy Ollie. Junior Matt Walker also tied a career-best with 10 points off the bench to complete the foursome in double digits.

In spite of the offensive success, the Yeomen victimized themselves with 21 turnovers, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game. The miscues turned into 30 points for the Terriers and resulted in the Yeomen hoisting 17 less shot attempts in the game.

Oberlin led the majority of the first half, jumping out to a quick 10-4 lead before building up a 29-22 cushion following a Cohen layup with 5:58 left in the frame.  However, the Yeomen struggled to finish off the stanza as the Terriers erased a 34-33 Oberlin lead over the final 3:43 to grab a 42-37 advantage at the intermission.

In the second half the Yeomen got off to a slow start, allowing Hiram to build a 14-point lead, 57-43, at the 14:25 mark.  Oberlin continued to scratch and claw, but could never shrink the gap back into single digits the rest of the way. Trailing 66-55 with 8:07 to go, the Yeomen suffered through an 11-2 Terriers' run over the next four minutes to effectively put the game away for good.

Oberlin, which fell to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in the NCAC, shot 50-percent (25-of-50) in the loss. Hiram (9-6, 3-5 NCAC) checked in at 46.3-percent (31-of-67). J.J. Woodson led the Terrier attack with 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting.

The Terriers out-rebounded the Yeomen 41-26 and had 25 second-chance points compared the Yeomen's six. Hiram's bench bunch also out-scored its Oberlin counterpart 35-12.

The Yeomen will finally return to Philips Gym on Wednesday night when Ohio Wesleyan comes to town for an 8 p.m. tip-off as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. It will mark the Yeomen's first home game since December 13.
