Women’s Basketball Handles Hiram

Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team earned its second straight North Coast Athletic Conference road win, defeating the Hiram College Terriers, 71-57, on Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard Lindsey Bernhardt spearheaded the Yeowomen effort by tying a career-high with 27 points as she made a career-best 11 shots on 22 attempts. The Terriers had no answer inside for rookie Anna Moore, as she was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor to finish with a career-best 16 points. The Northampton, Massachusetts, native also added tied a career-high with three blocks. Senior Christina Marquette registered her second consecutive double-double with 17 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists.

The Yeowomen got off to a quick start, building up an 18-2 lead just 4:30 into the contest. Oberlin would lead by as many as 18 as Bernhardt's layup at the 11:24 mark made it a 24-6 Yeowomen advantage. However, the Terriers were eventually able to settle in and worked the deficit down to 10 on two separate occasions before ultimately going into the break trailing trail by 11 at 39-28.

In the second half the Terriers never really threated a comeback as Oberlin continued to create separation, taking its first 20-point lead with 8:06 to go as Moore's jumper in the paint made it 59-39.  It was smooth sailing from that point as Hiram was able to get no closer than 14 points, which didn't happen until 31 seconds remained.

Oberlin shot 41.9-percent (26-of-62) in the win, while Hiram checked in at a 37.9-percent clip with 22 makes on 58 attempts. The Yeowomen cashed in 7-of-24 (29.2%) triple-tries and dialed in on 12-of-15 (80%) free-throw attempts.

Oberlin, which won the rebounding battle 47-31, evened up its record at 7-7 overall and moved to 3-2 in the NCAC. Hiram fell to 4-11 and 0-6 in league play.

The Yeowomen will be back at home on Wednesday night when The College of Wooster comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
