Youngstown, OH – Senior
Christina Marquette became Oberlin's all-time rebounding leader in the Yeowomen's 92-43 loss at Division I Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon.
Marquette, a native of Huntington Beach, California, ripped down a season-high 12 boards in the game to run her career total to 751. She surpassed former standout Alyssa Clark who had 746 rebounds in her four seasons from 2006-2009. Marquette scored just five points in the game, but added a career-high eight assists as well.
In the scoring column it was junior
Lindsey Bernhardt who led Oberlin with 12 points, while classmate
Katie Lucaites chipped in with seven points and a season-high seven rebounds.
The Yeowomen had a promising start to the contest as they hung with the Penguins midway through the first half before YSU took over. A beautiful feed inside from Marquette to Lucaites for a layup gave the Yeowomen a 12-11 lead at the 11:17 mark, but from there the Penguins turned up the defensive pressure and never looked back.
Nikki Arbanas hit three straight 3-pointers to start a 20-0 Penguin run to go up a 31-12. A triple-hit from
Connie Estevez would ultimately stop the bleeding and kill a near six-minute scoreless streak for Oberlin. However, the Penguins would eventually take a 40-19 lead into the intermission.
The Yeowomen continued to fight but could not shrink the gap in the second half. Oberlin shot 30.4-percent (17-of-56) from the floor, while the Penguins checked in a 49.3-percent (36-of-73).
A total of 12 different players scored at least two points for YSU as it ran its record to a perfect 7-0, while Oberlin dropped to 3-4. Arbanas led the Penguins with 13 points.
Oberlin returns to action on Friday, December 12 at the College of Wooster. Tip-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
