Kalamazoo, MI – Oberlin College women's basketball traveled north to battle Kalamazoo College in their final contest of 2014. The Yeowomen took control early, but a second half surge from Hornets left Oberlin with a 59-34 loss.
The Yeowomen struggled shooting as they hit a season-low 21.1% (12 of 57) from the floor.
Junior
Lindsey Bernhardt led the Yeowomen with 10 points and three assists. First-years
Abby Andrews and
Tyler Parlor each finished with seven off of the bench against the Hornets.
Senior
Christina Marquette, registered a game-high 11 rebounds but had a rough night shooting with four points. Kalamazoo's Querubin Dubois and Veronica Hayden struck for double-figures with 10 and 11 respectively, while Perri Nicholson led the Hornets with 10 rebounds.
Both sides exchanged the lead early until a Dubois layup knotted the game at 19-19 with 6:48 left in the half. A Bernhardt tied the game at 21-21 at the 3:35 mark, but it was all Hornets the rest of the way.
A 6-0 run to end the half gave Kalamazoo momentum into the second half. Poor shooting plagued the Yeowomen in the early stages of the second half as the Hornets extend their lead to 40-24 with a 20-3 run.
The Hornets maintained their control until the final buzzer despite the offensive efforts of Andrews and Parlor.
The loss slides the Oberlin women to 4-6 overalland 3-4 in non-conference play. Head coach
Kerry Jenkins and crew will look to move above .500 in non-conference action as they travel to Chicago to ring in the New Year with two non-conference matchups.
In the Windy City, the Yeowomen will take on Illinois Institute of Technology on January 2, 2015, followed by the University of Chicago on January 4. Tip off between Scarlet Hawks and Yeowomen on Jan. 2 is slated for 3 P.M. CST/4 P.M. EST.
