Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Fall to Unbeaten Panthers

Orange, CA – Playing for the first time over two weeks, the Oberlin College men's basketball team was unable to slowdown the undefeated Panthers of Chapman University, falling 72-50 on Monday afternoon at the Hutton Sports Center.

The Panthers, who sit just outside out the d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, moved to 8-0 while the Yeomen evened up their mark at 5-5 on the year.

Sophomore Jack Poyle led Oberlin with 13 points, but he ended the game as the Yeomen's lone double-digit point producer. Austin Little added seven points off the bench.

It was a promising start for the Yeomen as they opened the game with an 11-4 surge, but after a cold start the Panthers found their rhythm on the offensive end of the floor. They used an 18-3 run to secure a 22-14 lead with four minutes left in the half before Jesse Neugarten's transition layup temporality stopped the bleeding.

Unfortunately for the Yeomen, the Panthers continued their push and ultimately took a 38-19 lead into the intermission.

Essentially ranked 26th in the country, the Panthers continued to live up to their laurels in the second half, as Oberlin was never able to mount a significant comeback threat.

The Panthers shot 43.3-percent (26-of-60) in the win, while the Yeomen checked in at 36.8-percent (21-of-57). Taylor Hamasaki led all scorers with 16 points for the Panthers.

Oberlin was victimized by 15 turnovers that turned into 21 points for the Panthers. Chapman also held a large advantage at the free throw line, cashing in 14-of-20 attempts, while the Yeomen hoisted just five freebies and made two.

Oberlin will have a short turnaround as it will take on the University of La Verne tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. PST/5 p.m. EST.
