Orange, CA – Playing for the first time over two weeks, the Oberlin College men's basketball team was unable to slowdown the undefeated Panthers of Chapman University, falling 72-50 on Monday afternoon at the Hutton Sports Center.
The Panthers, who sit just outside out the
d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, moved to 8-0 while the Yeomen evened up their mark at 5-5 on the year.
Sophomore
Jack Poyle led Oberlin with 13 points, but he ended the game as the Yeomen's lone double-digit point producer.
Austin Little added seven points off the bench.
It was a promising start for the Yeomen as they opened the game with an 11-4 surge, but after a cold start the Panthers found their rhythm on the offensive end of the floor. They used an 18-3 run to secure a 22-14 lead with four minutes left in the half before
Jesse Neugarten's transition layup temporality stopped the bleeding.
Unfortunately for the Yeomen, the Panthers continued their push and ultimately took a 38-19 lead into the intermission.
Essentially ranked 26
th in the country, the Panthers continued to live up to their laurels in the second half, as Oberlin was never able to mount a significant comeback threat.
The Panthers shot 43.3-percent (26-of-60) in the win, while the Yeomen checked in at 36.8-percent (21-of-57). Taylor Hamasaki led all scorers with 16 points for the Panthers.
Oberlin was victimized by 15 turnovers that turned into 21 points for the Panthers. Chapman also held a large advantage at the free throw line, cashing in 14-of-20 attempts, while the Yeomen hoisted just five freebies and made two.
Oberlin will have a short turnaround as it will take on the University of La Verne tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. PST/5 p.m. EST.
