Yeowomen Bounce Back with a Big Win Over Thiel

Oberlin, Ohio – Christina Marquette and Lindsey Bernhardt combined for 44 points to lift the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a commanding 74-46 win over the visiting Thiel College Tomcats on Monday night at Philips Gym.

Marquette scored 17 of her season-high 24 points in the second half, which included a 5-of-6 effort from beyond the arc in the stanza. Bernhardt hit the 20-point plateau for the second time this year while also matching a career-high with six assists.

Rookie Anna Moore added a nice spark off the bench with her presence inside as she had the best game of her young collegiate career with 11 points, all of which came in the second half. The 6-foot-1 product from Northampton, Massachusetts, also ripped down a career-best six rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start shooting the basketball as Oberlin led 9-8 eight minutes into the game. The Yeowomen secured their first double-digit lead of the contest with 2:51 left in the opening frame as a Bernhardt layup extended the cushion to 26-15. Oberlin would ultimately head into the locker room with a 31-18 half-time advantage.

Early in the second half the Tomcats cut their deficit down to 10, 38-28, but they would get no closer the rest of the way. A string of three consecutive triple-hits by Marquette made it a 62-40 Oberlin lead with 5:26 to go and effectively put the game out of reach.

A game after not scoring any points off of turnovers, the Yeowomen flipped the script tonight – cashing in 28 points off 26 Thiel miscues. Oberlin finished with a season-high 18 steals and added five blocks on the defensive end. Marquette spearheaded the thievery by tying a career-high with six steals.

The Yeowomen, who moved to 3-2 on the year, also won the rebounding battle 43-36, which included a 15-6 margin on the offensive end.

Oberlin will now have a long recess for Thanksgiving break, as its next scheduled game is not until December 3 at home against Denison. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
