Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team was out of sync for much of the afternoon as the visiting Trine University Thunder cruised to a 63-43 win over the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Oberlin's starting five accounted for just 14 points in the game with a lone bright spot coming off the bench in the form of
Eleanor Van Buren. The 6-foot sophomore from Portland, Oregon, scored 12 points and added four rebounds in 17 minutes.
Oberlin shot a season-low 28.3-percent from the floor, connecting on just 15-of-53 attempts on the afternoon. The Thunder, who shot 39.1-percent (27-of-69), had four players finish in double figures as Kayla Dunn led the way with a game-high 14 points.
The Yeowomen got off to an extremely slow start and were never able to recover. The Thunder led 23-11 with 7:17 left in the first half and then used an 11-3 spurt to claim their first 20-point advantage of the game, 34-14, at the 3:37 mark. They would ultimately go into the intermission with a 36-20 cushion.
In the second half the Yeowomen tried to claw their way back into the game, but could never get the deficit down into single digits. Trailing by 19, 45-26, with 13:17 remaining, Oberlin used a 9-0 spurt to shrink the gap to 10, but the Thunder's Whitney Shaffer would halt the run with a clutch 3-pointer with 10:50 to go.
Oberlin later trailed by just 11, 50-39, with just under eight minutes to play, but Trine would close out the game on a 13-4 run to earn its second win of the season.
Oberlin, which fell to 2-2, was victimized by 21 turnovers, which translated into 21 points for Trine.
Luckily, the Yeowomen will have a chance to quickly forget about this one as they go right back to work on Monday night at home against Thiel. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
