Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the Bulldogs of Adrian College, 68-59, in a midweek, non-conference matchup from Philips Gymnasium.
Four Yeowomen finished in double figures in scoring including junior
Lindsey Bernhardt who finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
With the Yeowomen trailing 24-25 at the 4:20 mark in the first half, Bernhardt sparked a 5-0 run that began with a big 3-pointer. On the ensuing Adrian possession, the Miami, Florida native picked off a Bulldog pass and ran the floor for a fast break layup to move the Yeowomen ahead, 29-25. That spark kept the lead in Oberlin's favor as they took a two-point advantage, 33-31, into the half.
The Yeowomen maintained a narrow advantage over the Bulldogs in the early stages of the second until a pair of free throws from junior
Caroline Hamilton gave the Oberlin women an eight-point lead, 55-47, with 6:38 left in the game. Hamilton would finish with 13 points, five boards and four assists in the win.
Adrian continued to claw back into the game, cutting the Yeowomen lead to one, 55-54 with under five minutes to play. At the 4:09 mark, a surge of offense that began with a 3-pointer from
Christina Marquette put the game out of reach for Adrian.
Despite struggling from the floor early, Marquette led the Yeowomen offensively with her first double-double of the season. The 5-foot, 9-inch forward finished with a game-high 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
As the final minutes ticked away, the Bulldogs began to foul, forcing, Marquette, Bernhardt and Hamilton to the line. The trio combined for 10 points in the final two minutes to bring the final score to 68-59 and propel the Oberlin ladies to their second victory of the year.
The Oberlin offense got help in a big way off the bench from first year
Tyler Parlor who registered 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting, to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Oberlin women improve to 2-1 overall with Trine University visiting Philips Gymnasium this coming Saturday, November 22. Tipoff between the Yeowomen and Thunder is set for 2 p.m.
