Women’s Basketball Uses a Big Second Half to Down Hartwick

Swarthmore, PA – The Oberlin College women's basketball shot a scorching 77.8-percent from the field in the second half as it pulled away to earn a 66-46 win over Hartwick University in the opening round of the Swarthmore College Tip-off Tournament.

Oberlin had three players finish in double figures with junior Katie Lucaites leading the way with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Senior Christina Marquette added 15 points, while junior Lindsey Bernhardt contributed 13 in the win.

The Yeowomen led 16-8 eight minutes into the contest but the Hawks would use an 8-0 spurt over the next three minutes to tie the game. Oberlin would later take a 23-18 lead, but couldn't extend the gap any further as the Yeowomen took just a 28-25 advantage into the intermission.

However, in the second half the Oberlin offense would get dialed in, hitting 14-of-18 shots from the floor while going 7-of-8 at the free throw line over the final 30 minutes of action.

Oberlin led 37-34 with 12:29 left to play and then ripped off a 10-0 run that featured two triple-hits from Marquette to extend the OC cushion out to 13 with 10 minutes remaining. The Yeowomen continued to pour it on, opening a 20-point lead at the 2:46 mark before extending it out to 25 in the final minute.

The Yeowomen finished the game at 55.8-percent shooting, cashing in 24-of-43 attempts, which included an impressive 9-of-20 (45%) effort from behind the arc. The Hawks, who were led by a game-high 18 points from Emily Stone, shot 39.5-percent (17-of-43) in the loss.

Oberlin will now play Johnson and Wales University tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the tournament's championship game.
