Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College offense struggled to move the ball throughout the evening as they fell to the visiting Denison University Big Red, 34-7, on Saturday evening at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
The Yeomen scored the game's first touchdown, taking advantage of a muffed punt that was recovered inside the Denison 5-yardline by
Gabe Edwards. Quarterback
Lucas Poggiali would ultimately take advantage of the good fortune by rushing in from four yards out.
Unfortunately, those seven points proved to be the lone Oberlin points of the evening, as their offense never got going. The Yeomen netted just 170 yards on 69 plays.
Justin Cruz was the lone bright spot with 63 yards on five catches.
The Yeomen led 7-0 after one period, but the Big Red would tie the score early in the second as Charlie Mueller snagged a 9-yard TD toss from Brandon Skelar to cap a 10-play, 76-yard drive. Two more Big Red Touchdowns in the period made it a 21-7 game at the half. The last score of the half came in the form of a DuShawn Brown 54-yard TD reception.
Oberlin's offense continued to sputter for much of the second half, as Denison would put the game away for good with two more touchdowns in the third.
Justin Bute led the Yeomen defense with nine tackles, while
Bennett Jackson added eight stops and two pass break-ups.
The Yeomen will play their final home game of 2014 when Ohio Wesleyan University comes to town next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
