Oberlin, Ohio – The visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots upended the Oberlin College field hockey team, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
In the loss sophomore goalie
Maggie Gossiaux surpassed 250 saves for the season as she turned away 17 shots in the game to run her season total to 256.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead into the intermission as Kerry O'Connor setup on the back left post and tapped in a feed from Leah Prescott. Wooster would have a chance to add on late in the frame, but Shelly Stone saw her penalty stroke sail wide, while
Emma Hahn also had a key defensive save to keep it a one-goal deficit at the half.
The Yeowomen had some early opportunities off the corner, but were unable to capitalize.
Rachel Zuckerman,
Hannah Christiansen and
Ariana Enzerink each had shots on frame that were saved. With less than five minutes to go in the period
Maureen Coffey also had a look that hit just outside of the cage.
The Scots would take a 2-0 lead early in the second half, and the Yeowomen responded with a flurry of shots with three coming from Zuckerman and two from Coffey. Unfortunately, none of their attempts were able to find the back of the goal.
Stone would send in a long distance shot just inside the circle late in the second half to cap the game's scoring.
Oberlin finished with a season high 18 shots, 10 of which were on frame.
Kendra Lian joined Hahn and Enzerink with those who had defensive saves. The Yeowomen also earned 17 penalty corners compared to the Scots' 13.
With the setback the Yeowomen fell to 2-11 on the season and 2-10 in the NCAC. Wooster moved above the .500 mark at 9-8 overall and 6-6 in league play.
Oberlin will be back in action at Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon. The first touch is set for noon.
