Yeowomen Finish Day One of NCAC Championships in First, While Men Sit in Fifth

Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's and women's track and field teams ended the first day of the NCAC Championships from Kenyon College with a number of strong performances in field events and a sweep of the top four spots in the women's 10,000-meters.
 
After day one of the conference championships, the women sit in first place with 80 points, while the men currently rank fifth with 14 points.
 
Oberlin took the lead when four Yeowomen finished in the top four spots in Friday's final event, the 10,000-meter run. Junior Lauren Taylor (38:20.35), sophomores Lindsay Neal (38:24.31) and Sarah Jane Kerwin (38:24.65), and senior Hannah Wolfe (39:21.86) finished one through four, respectively.
 
Sophomore Erica Morelli rounded out the Yeowomen runners in seventh place with a time of 39:34.01, as all five of Oberlin's competitors in the event finished in the top seven.
 
In field events, first-year Larisa Lewis took the top spot in the shot put on Friday with a throw of 39-08.50, while sophomore Tiffany Henry followed with a third place distance of 38-07.75.
 
Henry went on to take fourth in the discus with a throw of 122-06.00, as first-year Amethyst Carey finished right behind her in fifth with a toss of 117-05.00.
 
Senior Jasmine Owens took second in the long jump with a distance of 17-06.25.
 
Senior Alexander Guo took first place in the long jump for the Yeomen with a distance of 22-06.25. In the pole vault, freshman Nate Danko took sixth after he cleared a height 13-07.25.
 
The Yeowomen will look to sustain their top spot on the leader board, while the men look to climb above their current rank of fifth on day two of the NCAC Championships at 10 a.m. tomorrow, May 4.
