Oberlin, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords belted out 32 hits, including 13 extra-base hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Oberlin College Yeomen on Saturday afternoon. The Lords took game one 17-3 and followed with a 12-7 win in the nightcap.
Most of the nine Oberlin pitchers that appeared on the day did not have their best stuff. Of the 29 runs allowed in the twinbill by the Yeomen staff, 25 were earned. They also combined to issue 18 walks.
It didn't take long to see it was going to be a tough day for the Yeomen faithful as a key outfield error in the top of the first inning in game one resulted in four unearned runs to eventually come across. Additionally, Oberlin starter
Mattie DeDoes was unable to limit the damage as the Lords jumped on him for five more runs in the second. He lasted just the two innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks.
Kenyon had five straight extra-base hits to start the third en route to adding five more runs and ultimately claiming a 14-0 lead.
Oberlin's only three runs of the game came in the fourth inning as it used two Kenyon errors and three hits to get on the board. A catcher's interference call with the bases loaded sent the first run across, and
Ryan Bliss then followed with an RBI single to right field. Rookie
John Evans would later score
Jeff Schweighoffer on a groundout to first base.
Kenyon would add two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Bliss, Schweighoffer and
Ben Whitener each had two hits for the Yeomen.
In game two the Yeomen tried to make a game of it late, but they dug themselves a 7-0 hole before coming to life.
Kenyon pushed one across in the second and added five more in the third and one in the fourth. Meanwhile, Lords' pitcher Spencer Byers had the Yeomen lineup stymied as he had a perfect game going through 4.2 innings until
Andrew Hutson's single to left broke things up. He would eventually come around to score Oberlin's first run of the game on a wild pitch after
Blaise Dolcemaschio worked a walk and Bliss singled.
The Lords would add two in the top of the sixth to go up 9-1, but the Yeomen would answer back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Mike McDonald roped a single up the middle and would come around to score on
Eric Knight's gap-shot double to right center. Schweighoffer would then plate Knight on an infield single to shortstop.
With the game still in the balance at 9-3, it was key for the Yeomen to have the Lords post zeros the rest of the way, but unfortunately that was not the case as Kenyon used three hits and two OC errors to add three more in the top of the seventh.
However, the Yeomen continued to fight as three straight singles with one out in the home-half of the seventh by Bliss,
Sean Cohen and
Mitch Novak sent a run home. However, Lords' relief pitcher Alex Kendall was able to limit the damage by recording a strikeout and groundout to leave the bases loaded.
Sam Sharpe who came in to record the final out of the seventh, pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to keep Oberlin's chances alive.
In the eighth the Yeomen would score three runs with two outs to make things interesting. Cohen would come through with a two-run single to left field and later score on Novak's triple to the gap in right center. Schweighoffer and Hutson also had hits in the inning and scored on Cohen's double to get the Yeomen within five.
Unfortunately in the ninth, Kenyon pitcher Matt Delbridge induced three straight pop-ups off the Yeomen bats to end the game.
With the sweep Kenyon improved to 14-6 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC East, while the Yeomen fell to 9-11 and 2-2 in league play. These same two teams will do it again tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. from Dill Field.
