Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team tied a school record for conference wins in a season, as it swept a doubleheader from Hiram College on Tuesday afternoon by the scores of 10-3 and 14-8.

With the pair of wins Oberlin improved to 9-7 in NCAC East play, marking the most conference wins in a season since 1986 when the Yeomen finished 9-11. However, this Yeomen team will have a chance to surpass that record as they still have three more league games remaining during the NCAC Cross-Over Weekend May 4-5. Today's sweep also gives the Yeomen a series sweep of Hiram – a series that took 24 days and two different fields to complete – as Oberlin took two from Hiram at Dill Field on March 30.

Six different Yeomen had two hits in the game-one victory, while sophomore Ben Whitener earned his first collegiate win on the mound as he worked 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He walked four and fanned one.

Oberlin would post single tallies in the second and third innings before erupting for six runs in the fourth. Daniel Baldocchi's RBI double in the second plated Oberlin's first run of the game and a Terriers error in the third made it 2-0 Yeomen.

In the six-run fourth the Yeomen had four hits and took advantage of two Hiram errors. Mitch Novak plated the first run of the inning on a double. Sean Cohen, Jeff Schweighoffer, Mike McDonald and Eric Knight also had RBIs in the inning.

Pitching with an 8-0 lead, Whitener may have let up somewhat as the Terriers were able to score three runs off of him over the next two innings to try and get back into the game. However, rookie Jesse Kohler came in to short-circuit any threat as he recorded the final seven outs en route to recording his first collegiate save. The Yeomen would add two more insurance runs to leave no doubt in the outcome.

Novak, Cohen, McDonald, Knight, Baldocchi and Robin Witjes each had two hits to account for 12 of the team's 13 hits in the game.

In game two the Yeomen found themselves down 4-1 after two innings, but then scored six in the third inning and would not trail again in the game.

The Yeomen sent 10 men to the plate during the barrage that started with an RBI single by Novak. Knight would follow with a run-producing single and Whitener would draw a bases-loaded walk. Schweighoffer would add an RBI single and rookie Blaise Dolcemaschio would follow with a sac fly to center. Witjes, who led off the inning with a bunt single, came up again to add an RBI hit of his own. The senior from Howell, Michigan, finished with four hits and four runs scored in the game.

Trailing 7-4 after the top of the third, the Terriers would not go away quietly as they posted single tallies in the third and fourth innings to get within one at 7-6.

The teams would trade runs in the fifth, but the Yeomen opened up the game with a three-run sixth. Dolcemaschio had a clutch two-out RBI hit and two more Hiram errors would ensue to allow two more Yeomen runs to score.

Hiram would push one across in the seventh, but the Yeomen would put the game away for good by plating three in the ninth. Novak, Knight and Whitener all had RBI's in the inning.

Knight tossed the final four innings and was credited with the win as he was deemed the most effective relief pitcher. He allowed just two hits and one unearned run while walking none and striking out two. What makes this appearance even more impressive is that he just threw a 100-pitch complete game in a 2-1 loss to Wooster on Sunday - giving him just one day of rest.

The Yeomen matched a season-high by pounding out 18 hits in the win. Novak and McDonald finished with three apiece, while Knight, Whitener and Schweighoffer had two each.

The Yeomen return to action on Saturday when it travels south to take on NCAC West member Denison University in a doubleheader. Game one of the non-conference twinbill will start at 12 p.m.
