Bluffton, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team earned a split with the Bluffton University Beavers on Monday afternoon, winning game one 18-8, before falling 3-2 in heartbreaking fashion in the nightcap.
In game one the Yeomen offense erupted for a season-high 18 runs on 16 hits as all but one Oberlin starter had at least one hit in the game.
Andrew Hutson continued to stay red hot as he was 3-for-5 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Sophomore Daniel Baldocchi also had four RBI's in the win.
Senior
Eric Knight picked up his first win of the season on the mound as he went six innings and allowed just two earned runs (six total). The right-hander from Scottsdale, Arizona, scattered 11 hits while walking one and fanning two.
Oberlin got on the board in the top of the third, plating three runs in the inning. Hutson came through with a two-run double and rookie catcher
Blaise Dolcemaschio would follow with a two-out single to score Hutson.
Oberlin would plate two more in the fourth, before exploding for seven runs in a fifth inning in which it sent 12 men to the plate. The Yeomen had just four hits in the rally as the Beavers pitching staff struggled to throw strikes. The big hit of the inning came courtesy of Baldocchi who roped a bases-clearing three-run double.
Bluffton would respond with five runs of its own to make it a 12-6 game, but the Yeomen would score four more in the sixth and two in the seventh to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome. In the sixth
Ben Whitener and Baldocchi each had a sacrifice fly, while
Jeff Schweighoffer had an RBI double before Hutson would add an RBI single. In the seventh, Oberlin scored on a sac fly by
Mitch Novak and a pinch-hit RBI single from
Mattie DeDoes.
After the two teams combined for 26 runs in the lid-lifter it would only be fitting that game two would be a pitcher's duel right from the start. Making just his second collegiate start, Whitener was simply dominant as he held the Beavers scoreless for six innings, but ultimately had nothing to show for it.
It was a scoreless game until the top of the fourth inning when the Yeomen scratched out a run. Hutson worked a two-out walk and would advance to second on a passed ball before coming around to score on Baldocci's single. The Yeomen would post another tally in the fifth as Jaspers led off the inning with a single and would later score on an infield hit by Knight.
Oberlin took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but unfortunately could not make it standup. A leadoff single resulted in Whitener being lifted from the game in favor of Yeomen closer
Mike McDonald. However, what followed was a fielder's choice in which nobody was retired, two singles and a key Oberlin error that all added up to three runs for Bluffton as it stole away the win.
Oberlin, which is now 9-9 on the season, will be back in action on the weekend when it host Kenyon College in a key NCAC East series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. each day.
