Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team played much more polished today against St. John's University (MN), but the Yeomen still found themselves on the wrong end of a pair of 6-3 games on Wednesday morning at the Kino Sports Complex.
In the lid-lifter the Johnnies, who were a 2012 NCAA Tournament team, jumped on Yeomen starter
Eric Knight with three runs in the top of the first and tacked on one more in the second to lead 4-0.
Oberlin's first hit of the game came in the top of the fourth inning on
Mike McDonald's double to left field, however, he was left stranded. The Johnnies would plate a run in the bottom of the fourth before Oberlin was finally able to get on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Jeff Schweighoffer led off the fifth with a single to right field and later score on
Robin Witjes' sac fly to right. Sophomore
Mitch Novak would then come through with a clutch two-out two-run double to score
Zach Jaspers and
Blaise Dolcemaschio to make it a 5-3 game.
The Johnnies would post a single tally in the sixth to regain a three-run lead. After a silent sixth, Oberlin was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh with two out following a single by Jaspers and walk to Witjes, however, St John's closer Joey Long was able to induce a ground-ball out to lock down his third save of the season.
Knight tossed all six innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit two batters over 95 pitches of work.
In the nightcap the Johnnies plated two runs in the bottom of the second on a critical two-out error by the Yeomen defense, but Oberlin would respond with single runs in both the second and third to get back to even. Schweighoffer smoked a two-out double down the left-field line and come around to score on a single back up the middle by freshman
Colin Brown. In the third it was Knight's long double to center that scored Novak to tie the game at 2-2.
In the fourth inning Yeomen starter
Harrison Wollman started to tire out as three walks and two hits in the inning allowed SJU to post three runs in the frame. However, the 6-foot-3 right hander from Pacific Palisades, California, still pitched a strong game as he tossed 3.2 innings, surrendering five runs (three earned) on just five hits. Fellow newcomer
Jesse Kohler recorded the final out of the inning to get out of the jam by stranding two base runners.
Oberlin answered back with a single tally in the fifth on McDonald's two-out single through the left side to score Jaspers, who led off the inning with a double to left center. Unfortunately, it proved to be the team's last run of the game and last of the trip.
The Yeomen return home with a record of 6-8 overall, having lost eight in a row. Their weekend conference series against Hiram has already been canceled due to weather, meaning the Yeomen's next scheduled contest is Monday, April 1 at Bluffton University at 1 p.m.
