Stats from the Trip (8 Games)
Tucson, AZ – The Oberlin College baseball team fell to Hamline University 16-5 and 15-4 on Tuesday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Yeomen pitching staff was unable to slow down the potent Hamlime lineup in both games.
In game one, the Pipers touched up Yeomen starter
Justin Kidd for seven runs in the first two innings. However, Oberlin answered back with three runs in the third to get back into the game.
Mike McDonald came through with a two-out two-run double to centerfield and later scored on an attempted double steal play.
Robin Witjes would tack on a two-out run-producing single in the fourth to make it a 7-4 game, but Hamline would rough up the Oberlin bullpen for nine runs over the next two innings to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Rookie
Daniel Becker did record his first collegiate hit in the seventh and would come around to score on
Mitch Novak's double for Oberlin's fifth and final run of the game.
In game two, the Yeomen got off to a good start by scoring four runs in the first two innings to lead 4-2, but the Yeomen would go silent from that point on, while the Pipers would respond with 13 unanswered runs.
Hamline scored two runs in the top of the first, but Oberlin tied the game at two in the bottom of the frame with run-producing at-bats from
Eric Knight and
Jeff Schweighoffer.
In the Yeomen second, Novak would send the first run home on a sac fly to right field and Knight would follow with a bouncing-ball single over the third basemen's head to score Witjes.
Unfortunately, for the Yeomen the Pipers would respond with three runs in the third, and four runs in each of the next two innings to put the game away.
The Yeomen fell to 6-6 on the year and 2-6 on the trip, while Hamline increased its record to 13-3.
Oberlin will conclude its spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against St. John's University (MN).
Oberlin fans should note that the weekend series at Hiram that was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday has already been canceled. No makeup dates have been announced at this time.
