Tucson, AZ – A day after belting out 27 hits, the Oberlin College baseball team managed just eight hits as they were swept by Luther College 10-0 and 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex.
However, sophomore
Andrew Hutson continued to swing a hot bat as he was 3-for-5 on the day and has now reached base safely in all eight games so far this season.
Game one started out as a pitcher's duel as Yeomen starter
Eric Knight and Norse starter Alex Byom were going toe-to-toe for the first three innings. Knight entered the fourth inning having thrown just 39 pitches, 31 of which went for strikes. However, in the fourth the Norse were finally able to breakthrough as they scored six runs on five hits to go along with two critical Oberlin miscues that extended the inning and resulted in five of the six runs allowed to be unearned.
Staring at a 6-0 deficit, the Yeomen threatened in the fifth by loading the bases with one out, but
Kevin Verne grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. It was one of four double plays the Norse turned in the game and one of seven twin-killings they had in the doubleheader.
Luther would add four more insurance runs in the seventh to put the game away for good. Knight allowed just one earned run in five innings, while striking out six.
Oberlin had no answer for Byom who went the distance and surrendered just three hits. He walked four and struck out five in the win.
In game two, freshman
Harrison Wollman made his collegiate debut and did an admirable job on the mound as he worked his way through five innings, while giving up four earned runs.
The Norse plated single tallies in each of the first three innings to go up 3-0. The Yeomen stranded two runners in the third and had a chance to make some headway in the fourth, but they just could not come up with a timely hit. The Yeomen loaded the bases with two outs and were gifted a run as a failed pick-off attempt allowed
Eric Knight to score while moving runners to second and third. Unfortunately, Norse pitcher Danny Smith was able to record a big strikeout to limit the damage.
Luther would tack on a run in the fifth to go back on top by three. After a quiet sixth, the Yeomen tried to create one last rally as singles by Hutson and
Mattie DeDoes brought the tying run to the plate with one out. Then
Zach Jaspers came to the plate a smoked a line drive right at the first baseman who was able to tag out DeDoes for the game-ending double play.
The Yeomen, who fell to 6-2 on the season, will look to get back on track tomorrow with a split doubleheader against Carthage College and Carleton College. Both games will be nine-inning affairs with the first starting at 12:30 p.m. PST/3:30 p.m. EST.
